Elisa - Dancing (2008)

Review by Rick Anderson from allmusic.com
Elisa is a star in Italy, where her previous albums have sold in huge numbers. Dancing is her U.S. debut, and it has to be said that these American ears are having a hard time figuring out what the big deal is. She certainly has a fine voice, a slightly dark and unusually timbered one that is perfectly suited to her big, emotional songs of longing and romantic wonder. The problem is the songs themselves, which are pretty enough and nicely produced, but seem rather shapeless and can't seem to get out of a plodding, midtempo rut. The melodies are bombastic without ever being especially catchy: notice, in particular, the soggy textures of the title track and of the slogging, inane "Rainbow." "Broken" injects a little bit of energy into the proceedings along with a nice rhythmic changeup, and on "Life Goes On" she succeeds in morphing into an understated loveliness that works very well and suggests that with better material she might be a world-class talent. But "Rock Your Soul" almost sounds like an ironic title given the song's complete lack of energy, and "A Little Over Zero" features bizarre samples or synthesizer parts in the background that aren't even in the same key as the rest of the song. Then there are the lyrics. For better or for worse, English is the international language of pop music, and I suppose American listeners have no one to blame but themselves for that fact. But no matter what your native language, there's no excuse for lines like "Then I wish to brake it but just for a while/A saint for each bound" and "Life goes on/Here and beyond that horizon/It goes on and it changes/And it changes you too." There are a few impressive moments scattered through this album, but nowhere near enough of them to justify purchase

Elisa - Lotus (2003)

Elisa - Lotus (2003)
Lotus is the fourth studio album by Elisa, released in 2003 (see 2003 in music). Initially idealized as a live album, Lotus became a mix between studio album (with six new songs), a greatest hits album (due to the seven songs re-recorded from previous albums) and a cover album (three are the covers). The album is predominantly acoustic; following the initial idea, in fact, the album was completely recorded as a live.

The album starts with a cover version of Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah form his 1984 Various Positions. "Sleeping in Your Hand", "Labyrinth" and "The Marriage" are taken from her debut 1997 album Pipes & Flowers, "Gift" and Luce (tramonti a nord est) from her second album Asile's World and from her third album Then Comes the Sun were taken two songs, "Rock Your Soul" and "Stranger". All of them were revisited in acoustic version, really in contrast with the initial forms. Femme Fatale was covered by The Velvet Underground first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico and even it was slowed and changed very much from its initial form, while Almeno tu nell'universo was an italian famous song by Mia Martini.

Elisa - Caterpillar (2007)

Though it's simply touted as the international version of Soundtrack '96-'06, which was a collection of Elisa's favorites (plus a few new songs), Caterpillar actually has a fairly different track listing from its predecessor, swapping out some of the Italian singer's (who often sings in English) older hits for newer singles. There is some overlap: the song "Stay" and what was her duet with Ligabue previously, "Gli Ostacoli del Cuore," now just with featuring Elisa, both show up here, as do cuts like "Broken," "Luce (Tramonti a Nord Est)," and "Heaven Out of Hell," but the rest of the compilation (which is significantly shorter than Soundtrack -- 13 tracks to 17 -- and lacks the handwritten lyrics and notes that were included in the Italian issue) is filled up with songs like "Electricity," "Rock Your Soul," and a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." All of which means that Caterpillar is less retrospective (hence the title change) than introduction, something to entertain Elisa's audience outside Italy who may have run across one of her songs, and probably not for longtime fans.
