[1998] Mulan [Soundtrack] [Mp3 Download]

|

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Lea Salonga, best known as the voice of Jasmine in Aladdin, steals the show here as the title character in Disney's Mulan. The former star of Miss Saigon adds touching elements to the feature, especially on introspective numbers such as "Reflection." Unfortunately, the voice of Donny Osmond, relegated to anthems such as "I'll Make a Man Out of You" doesn't really enhance the story line, a saga set in ancient China. Jerry Goldsmith provides the Far East tinge to the score, almost reminiscent of early Les Baxter. While Mulan is a far cry from the memorable Beauty and the Beast, it is both funny and charming. --Jason Verlinde

[2007] A Modern Way of Living with the Truth - The Exies [Mp3 Download]

Reviews by Stephen Thomas Erlewine@allmusic.com

The Exies never were anything but a grunge band living in a post-grunge land, something that was a bit easier to get away with at the start of their career in 2000 than in the thick of it. Even with neo-grunge bands like Nickelback lumbering across the country, the retro-grunge of the Exies feels out of date in 2007 -- possibly because Nickelback assimilates their influences into a sound that's defiantly the lowest common denominator (it's what gives 'em hits), and the Exies simply recycle Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots to their heart's content. Now, they don't necessarily do that badly, yet they do it with no flair and not a whit of originality, something that comes into sharp relief on their fourth full-length, Modern Way of Living with the Truth. There's nothing unexpected here, nothing that couldn't have fit on their other three albums and it's all something that would have felt more at home on the radio 1994 than it would in 2007, or in 2003, when their major-label debut, Inertia, was released. Again, just because this style of heavy grunge is out of fashion doesn't mean that the Exies do it badly, and there are times when they nail the sound, if not the intent, of Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots, who remain the two biggest influences on the band. On "Lay Your Money Down" they create a dead ringer for the Seattle trio and on "A Fear of Being Alone" they capture the murky neo-psychedelic hooks of STP, and these are the best moments on the record because they're powered by big hooks, both in the guitars and in the vocals. On the rest of the record, the Cobain and Weiland fixations of lead Exie Scott Stevens still hang heavy, but the songs are colorless: there are no hooks, no textures, nothing but stylized gloomy grunge. Fans looking for more of the same may be satisfied, but four albums and nearly a decade into the band's career, some fans may also be wondering if this is all there is to the Exies.

[2002] The Big Room - M2M [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
This Norwegian duo transcended the glossy teen-pop sound of their debut Shades of Purple through sincere performances and good songwriting. With their sophomore set, Marion Raven (vocals/keyboards) and Marit Larsen (vocals/guitars) take an organic, live approach to their music as they enlist the support of rock veterans including drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist T-Bone Wolk, and guitarist Jimmy Bones. The results range from tender ballads to energetic pop-rockers. M2M continue to distinguish themselves not only by their catchy vocal harmonies and songwriting talent but by shirking clichés. They don't serenade boys with cutesy ballads, nor do they flaunt sexual innuendoes. This is teen-pop with a genuine sense of romanticism and innocence lacking from the Britneys, Mandys, and Christinas of the world. Marion and Marit's well-crafted songs don't just deal with being and falling in love, they deal with hurt and disappointment. They even get downright catty on "Jennifer," their ode to female jealousy, and give "Miss Popular" a taste of exclusion. Although they may not yet have achieved the multiplatinum American status of other teen singers, the women of M2M should prove to have a much longer career. --Bryan Reesman

[2000] Shades of Purple - M2M[Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Having already won a place in the hearts of American audiences with "Don't Say You Love Me" from the first Pokémon feature film, Norwegian duo M2M make impossibly sweet pop of the pubescent sort. Think '80s Debbie Gibson and current teen-beat towheaded brother group Hanson. More wholesome than Britney or Christina (and arguably more talented than both put together), M2M sport stylings akin to girl-pop top bananas TLC. Endearingly, Marit and Marion's Shades of Purple is a soundtrack for deliriously crushed-out teens right here, right now. The airwaves are ripe and ready for this comely twosome, whose delightful "Don't Say You Love Me" and "Mirror Mirror" are hot tickets to blissful wonder in 2000. The harmonies are tight, the hooks fresh and light, and these songs simply sound great pouring out of a car full of twinkly young girls with every hope for a bright, shiny day. --Paige La Grone

[2006] As Cruel as School Children - Gym Class Heroes [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

The Roots aren't the only hip-hop group to build their sound around live instrumentation. Yet this Upstate New York quartet doesn't sound much like Philly's finest. Further, As Cruel as School Children is more radio-ready than previous efforts, especially "Cupid's Chokehold," which appropriates Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" to fine effect, i.e. "Take a look at my girlfriend / She's the only one I got." (A different mix appears on The Papercut Chronicles.) Not many indie-pop artists can freestyle, though, as frontman Travis McCoy proves on "Sloppy Love Jingle, Pts. 1-3," a trio of a cappella raps. Aside from dividing these tracks into "periods," "study halls," and the like, in fitting with the high school theme, McCoy's narratives touch on teachers, cheerleaders, and lunch room chatter. Guests include William Beckett (The Academy Is...) on "7 Weeks" and Speech (Arrested Development) on "Biter's Block." Cruel as School Children was co-produced by Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy) and released by band mate Pete Wentz's Decaydance imprint. Stump, who pops up in the "Cupid" video, also provides programming and backing vocals. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Putting aside the Girl Power phenomenon--really, what were the chances five scantily-clad birds flashing their knickers with kung-fu kicks wouldn't make it in the music industry?--the Spice Girls really do mean something: great singles. There's not a dog in their whole back-catalogue. They kicked off their career with "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1"--that's the pop equivalent of an Olympic gold in the triathlon. They're all here on Spice, along with the live favourite "If You Can't Dance"--one that Geri always looked particularly picked-upon whilst singing--and that irresistible champagne effervescence of pop history in the making. The only mistake they made at this point in their career was not releasing the slinky R&B track "Naked" as a single; and if that's because the video plot automatically suggests itself as too obvious, it's not as if that curtailed any other facet of their career. --Caitlin Moran

[1999] The Globe Sessions - Sheryl Crow [Mp3 Download]

|

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

For some fairly shallow performers, there comes a time when their craft becomes a chore, when scribbling songs for the big follow-up album turns into a black-and-white deadline. Clever composers can almost disguise this ennui, burying it in a smarmy, sunshine-beaming mix. Key word: almost. Ergo, a trial spin through clever composer Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions evokes the faintest hint of a feeling that grows stronger with each successive listening--there's no sense that the artist intended this material as anything more than tepid album filler. A conversation with your local supermarket checkout girl would prove far more riveting than Crow's pretentious and all-too-casual observations (set to the tune, it must be noted, of some likable, jangly hooks). "Get out the camera, take a picture / The drag queens and the freaks are all out on the town," she purrs over chucka-chucka choogling on "There Goes the Neighborhood," which is probably what any self-respecting drag queen or freak would mutter once Crow moved in, scrounging for her now-patented vicarious cool. The closest The Globe Sessions comes to any palpable sincerity is during an actually-might've-lived-it, whoops-I'm-in-trouble-again "Mississippi." Even then, Crow drowns the moment in perfectly enunciated syllables, more prissy than alleycat-prowling. Crow started out with a credible Tuesday Night Music Club pedigree, surrounded by visionaries such as David Baerwald (For this disc, she relies heavily on ex-Wire Train mainstay Jeff Trott). But they're gone, and things change, to the point where, if you support this silly sycophant with your hard-earned dollars, there's only one question that you'll need to be asked: Do you want paper or plastic? --Tom Lanha

[2005] Wildflower - Sheryl Crow [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com

Since her 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow has been churning out unassailably appealing CDs in an unassailably appealing voice. Which means, according to the rules of the pop music cosmos, by album six it's about time for a misstep. Natural law, fortunately, will have to keep checking its watch. Wildflower moves Sheryl Crow one step closer to Hall of Fame status as she shunts the established rock star's impulse to get all experimental, but instead sprawls, rambling rose-like, across the substance-spiked pop landscape she helped pioneer. Three ingredients, glistening vocals, flawless production, and catchy songs rub up against one another in all the right places. These ingredients will cause you to hold your breath on the beautiful piano ballad "Always on Your Side." They pop up again on the George Harrison-esque "Where Has All the Love Gone" reminding you that Crow can reflect and reveal as convincingly as she can rock. If there is a ripple that runs through Wildflower, it's a pensive one. On the spacy "Chances Are," she sings of being "...lost inside a daydream." The measure of her talent, ripe and reappraisal-resistant, is her ability to consistently bring us inside the bubble with her. --Tammy La Gorce

[2003] Ladies Night - Atomic Kitten [Mp3 Download]

|

Review by PopPrincess (United States/Texas) @Amazon.com

I discovered Atomic Kitten a few years ago having watched an episode of Top Of the Pops and fell in love with one of their songs called The Last Goodbye. Only recently have I gone back and discovered the rest of their material and Ladies Night being the last album the Kittens made just before their hiatus from the music business. If the Kittens don't return as a group, Ladies Night serves as a great swan song for the girls. Compared to the two other albums released by Atomic Kitten, Ladies Night is a fresh and mature departure. All members contribute to writing most of the tracks and each get equal singing duties. Songs like "Don't Let Me Down" & "Everything Goes Around" show how much the girls have grown and tap into what almost every person has felt at one time or another over failed relationships and lost love. "Believer" and "I Won't Be There" are also gems. Of course, the Kittens wouldn't be the Kittens without a few disco pop tunes like the title track "Ladies Night" featuring Kool & The Gang and a classic pop tune "Be With You". Overall, this album is a classic pop record that won't date itself. The girls should really be proud of themselves this go round. Hopefully this isn't the last of Atomic Kitten. Seeing how far they've come and just how talented they are shows how much promise these girls have and what a waste of talent it would be if they didn't make another record together.

[2006] FutureSex / LoveSounds - Justin Timberlake [Mp3 Download]

|

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
One spin of FutureSex/LoveSounds and it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake was ever a boy-band barnstormer--no modern-day male artist beats him when it comes to single-minded self assurance or suavity. "SexyBack," the inescapable summer sizzler of a first single off this short and thrillingly unwholesome disc, makes that clear on its own: If there was ever any question about whether sexy was in need of reviving--a doubtful proposition at best, given the sheer volume of JT's gyrating counterparts--he lays it to rest instantly over a small but insistent Timbaland-concocted beat. On that track, Timberlake's appeal is his sweet but newly thuggish-sounding voice--here's a good kid gone bad, and he's determined to convince us of it not only by tossing a few well-timed mother****ers our way but also with such lyrics as "I'll let you whip me if I misbehave." The rest of FutureSex will feel familiar to anyone who picked up 2002's brilliantly funk-flecked Justified: "Love Stoned/I Think She Knows Me," shifts from Michael Jackson-esque paranoid trilling to pulsating guitar rock; "Chop Me Up," a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia and Timbaland, gives up the grit rap-style but still manages to recall both Prince and Stevie Wonder; "My Love," with T.I., mines classic Timberlake territory with meltaway lyrics like "I can see us holding hands walking on the beach/Our clothes in the sand"; and the straight-up but groovy lament "Losing My Way" asks, searchingly, what may be the silliest question a squeal-inducing pop star has ever posed: "Can anybody out there feel me?" Rest assured, JT: we feel every past-, present-, and future-sexy verse. --Tammy La Gorce

[2002] Justified - Justin Timberlake [Mp3 Download]

|

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
Common wisdom holds that debut albums have an autobiographical slant, so it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake's first non-'N Sync outing doesn't purloin much of its subject matter from the singer's breakup with Britney Spears. Half the songs are about the abrupt severing of a romance and the singer's rather hard-hearted stance. Sure, he may have been the wronged party, but that doesn't excuse the inflexible emotional posture revealed in "Cry Me a River," "Never Again," and the sniping "Last Night." But Timberlake apparently thinks it does, since he christened his record Justified. He also seems to enjoy boasting about the swinging single life, with many of the songs here almost gratuitously lascivious. Asides like "I could think of a couple positions for you" from "Right for Me" and "Better have you naked by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body" will catapult the singer right off Radio Disney. But Timberlake shines when he moonwalks into more adult terrain, turning his back on the innocent dance pop that put 'N Sync on the charts. With the help of hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, Timbaland, and P. Diddy, Timberlake has turned out a remarkably cohesive and sophisticated slice of club-friendly R&B. --Jaan Uhelszki

[2006] A Public Affair - Jessica Simpson [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews
@Amazon.com
A Public Affair is a disco-studded, stunningly entertaining, 13-song slab of energetic white-girl pop. From the summer-fizzy first song and title track--which lifts, improbably, from both Madonna and the Supremes--Simpson tears out of the gate refusing to fall back on stale-sounding power ballads, something of a signature in the past. "You Spin Me Round" updates the Dead or Alive '80s hit; the vampy and innovative "B.O.Y." borrows from a vintage Cars track; and "Walkin' 'Round in a Circle," about as sleepy a track as you'll find here, seems to put a kind of pop spit-shine on a tune both Stevie Nicks and Ryan Adams popularized. Later tracks, including the excellent Louis Prima-inspired "Swing with Me" and the shockingly urban-sounding "Fired Up," bring Simpson's inner femme fatale to the fore. Let's hope it doesn't slink away anytime soon--other Simpson discs have been forgettable, but this is an affair to remember. --Tammy La Gorce

[2007] Introducing Joss Stone - Joss Stone [Mp3 Download]

|

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As good as Joss Stone's previous efforts are, Introducing Joss Stone represents a giant step forward: there's a freshness to these songs that suits her age (19 as of the album's release) and a funkiness that suits modern pop sensibilities. There's also a cross-hatching of visions with artists like Lauryn Hill and Common that will rightly advance her reputation as an artist who can sling disco, R&B, and rock almost as convincingly as soul. Splicing girl-group harmonies with blaxploitation-style funk with Joplin-esque and, at times, Shelby Lynne-reminiscent vocals, Stone works these Raphael Saadiq-produced beats with the stealth and steadiness of a '70s-era legend who's still going strong. "Girl They Won't Believe It," she wails against the tight hoo-hoo harmonizing of talented backup singers on the opening track; get a load of how much she's accomplished in the space of three albums, and you won't believe it, either. --Tammy La Gorce

[2001] Discovery - Daft Punk [Mp3 Download]

Review by Knyte (Chicago, IL) @Amazon.com
Every song on Daft Punk's 'Discovery' is unique - no two songs sound alike. Daft Punk (in my opinion) really knew what they were doing when they put this album together; it's a wonderful expression of their love for dance music. My two favorite songs on here are "Digital Love" (#3) and "Face To Face" (#13).

"Digital Love" combines disco themes with classic rock a la Manfred Mann's 70's hit, "Blinded By The Light" - there's even a virtuoso guitar solo in the middle of the song. I hope "Digital Love" ends up being a single; I really, really like this one.

"Face To Face" is pure 80s, with a millenial feel to it. It combines elements of early Prince with a touch of New Order. This is my favorite song on the album...I wish it was longer.

Other tracks I must mention are "Aerodynamic" (#2), "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (#4), and "Crescendolls" (#5) [this song is zany, but I like it anyway]

If you enjoy songs like "Lady" by Modjo (sounds like George Michael to me), "I'll Fly With You" (Gigi D'Agostino) or ATC's "Around The World (La, La, La, La, La) - you'll appreciate this. Most (if not all) dance music fans are already familiar with track #1, "One More Time" by now; when you listen to it, it does feel like a celebration, doesn't it?

Just close your eyes and let this album take you away...

[1997] Homework - Daft Punk [Mp3 Download]

Editorial Reviews@Amazon.com
After rocking the suburbs with the infectious and persistent "Da Funk" (with its amusingly pointless Spike Jonze video), Gallic pranksters Daft Punk unleashed Homework, an album that combined everything good about house music with everything bad about French pop and changed the face of dance music in the process. The sound of production duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem is a raw and dirty collage of cheap drum machines (wired for maximum swing) welded to endless filtered loops and embellished with everything from guitars to talk-box vocals. The beats are lifted straight from the Chicago House textbook, but the simple bass lines and catchy hooks make a listenable pop song from what would normally be a stripped-down DJ tool. Uncompromising yet totally accessible. --Matthew Corwine

[2004] Chuck - Sum 41[Mp3 Download]

Review by Anthony Rupert(Milwaukee, WI) @Amazon.com
Sum 41 seemed like they were on a high when they busted out in 2001 with "Fat Lip" and "In Too Deep", which in turn resulted in good sales of their second album All Killer No Filler. But when they came back with Does This Look Infected, somehow it wasn't the same effect; they'd kind of turned into just another band. Maybe Deryck and the boys figured that the punk-pop scene was too disposable, which explains why they have a more mature sound on Chuck.

This album was released rather quietly (yeah, let's go with that), but it's still pretty above-average. There are still some songs that stay true to the band's original style, though, especially in my favorite song, "Pieces". But then they experiment with heavier metal-like sounds, too: check out the guitars in "No Reason" and "88".

But the problem lies in what other reviewers have said: they rely on other bands' ideas too much. "There's No Solution" sounds like Linkin Park's "In the End"; and sorry, but "I'm Not the One" completely rips off Limp Bizkit's "My Generation". Even "Open Your Eyes" sounds like their own "Hell Song".

While Chuck didn't really do much sales-wise, it shows that Sum 41 have grown in their music. Let's hope that they start relying more on their own ideas in the future, though, so they can be taken as a serious band again.

[2007] Insomniatic - Aly & AJ [Mp3 Download]

Review by Smiley Smile (Boulder, CO United States) @Amazon.com
Aly & AJ are back with a new Cd and a new sound. They have added new wave sonics- like synths & voice effects- which sound different than their previous work. While I loved the sound of " Into the Rush"- I realize that artists have to grow and try to keep up with the time. The sound may have changed but the great talent of the Michalka sisters remains. They have great voices and write all their own songs which are very personal mostly about breaking up and falling in love. While I like all the songs the standouts are Potential Breakup Song-the first single; Insomniatic , a hard rocker; Like Whoa, a really fun upbeat song; and Silence, the most beautiful song Aly & AJ have ever recorded!
There is also a great remix of Chemicals React - my all-time favorite Aly & AJ song.
The new sound and at times overwhelming production of the CD may put some peaople off- but I think the sincerity & talent of Aly & AJ will win over people who give it a try.
Aly & AJ remain fine singers and worthy role models and this CD is a potential smash hit in my book!

[2006] The Love Album - Westlife [Mp3 Download]

Review by Amanda Richards(Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
Just when you thought that boy bands were extinct, along comes Westlife, the Irish crown princes of the cover song, with yet another album - just in time for your favorite aunt to get you a copy for Christmas.

The songs on this album (number eight) were specially chosen by the group, and include the eternal "The Rose" as the first single, originally sung by the divine Bette Midler, covered by LeAnn Rimes and more recently young Bianca Ryan.

The cover of the classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is easily eclipsed by the original, as it lacks the thunderous power of Bonnie Tyler's vocals, and on Air Supply's "All Out of Love", their voices just don't seem to gel well with Delta Goodrem. Their version of "You Light Up My Life" is okay for a tired old chestnut, and even Lionel Richie might find himself humming along with "Easy".

Other tracks include "You Are So Beautiful" (Billy Preston or Joe Cocker); Leo Sayer's "Have You Ever Been in Love"; "Love Can Build a Bridge" (The Judds, Cher and a bunch of others) and Garth Brooks' "The Dance". Boy band covers boy band for "All or Nothing", originally an O-Town hit, and the album ends on a "Righteous" note with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"

Fans of Westlife will snap this one up like I did, but it doesn't exactly fill me to the brim with that lovin' feeling.

[2005] Face to Face - Westlife [Mp3 Download]

Review by Alan Ng "Silver Hawk" (Torrance, CA USA)@Amazon.com
I didn't know most (or all?) of the tracks in "Face to Face" are remake of other singers' until I read the reviews here. Nevertheless, Westlife sings well! I think they are the only group that survive in 2006 (and Backstreet Boys) that is labeled as a "boy band". I couldn't give this a 5-star because of lack of originality, but I think they deserve a 4-star just for their singing! However, it feels like that Shane and Mark are the only one singing...Nicky and Kian are just back vocals (I would want them to sing more solo parts).

You Raise Me Up - 5/5!!! Great song overall...strong vocal from Shane and Mark! This song caught my attention when it was played during "American Inventors"...very emotional! The music video for this song is great!

When You Tell Me That You Love Me - 4/5!!! Great song overall...I don't think Diana Ross's voice matches Westlife's voice, but a great crossover nevertheless. The music video for this song is great too!

Amazing - 5/5!!! Love it! Love it! It is refreashing to hear something upbeat after 2 slow songs. Shane's voice is great! The music video is just ok.

That's Where You Love Me - 5/5!!! I think this is my favorite track in this entire album...great job!!! I will never be tired of listening to this song!

She's Back - 3/5!!! Another upbeat song...a fun track, but Amazing is so much more better...

Desperado - 4/5!!! At this point of the album, I was wondering "where did Nicky and Kian go??? Shane/Mark, stop hogging all the parts!" I like the remake of this song! However, I want the dramatic part to be more dramatic...the ending is quite good though.

Colour My World - 4/5!!! Wow...their voices can go so high...defintely better than the BSB version (however, this song is never released in America from BSB). But I think they are trying to be too much BSB...they should make this song Westlife style.

In This Life - 4/5... This song wasn't that appealing at first, but after listening to it 10 times, it gets you!

Heart Without A Home - 4/5! This song sounds too much like Nick Carter...especially when Shane strain his voice like Nick Carter (I think it's Shane...not sure, correct me if I am wrong). But a great song nevertheless! Love it!

Hit You With The Real Thing - 5/5! Wow...so different than the previous tracks...I am giving it a 5-star just for trying different style...the only real dancing song in this album (unless you can dance along with She's Back).

Change Your Mind - 4/5! I guess this is an easy-listening song...not too special...not a good selection to end this near-perfect album...but there is a...

BONUS TRACK: Maybe Tomorrow - 5/5! Great way to end the album! Nice song! ....

I hope Westlife will release more album in the future...and actually make new songs, so I can give them a 5-star next time! Get this album today!!!!!

Editorial Reviews @ Amazon.com
What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy’s mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

[2007]Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus[Soundtrack][Mp3 Download]

|

Review by The Blue Raja (MD, USA) @Amazon.com
Who would have thought that the follow up album to the catchy but not-so-serious Hannah Montana soundtrack could be such a solid release, a solid DUAL release at that. Miley's two personas combine to deliver a power-pop fusion of rockin' tunes that span styles of pop, rock, and even a slight touch of country and reggae. Miley's raspy girl-next-door voice will certainly please Ashlee Simpson fans (if you don't believe me sample the track "As I Am"... she sounds just LIKE Ashlee), and some tracks deliver a good enough punch to draw even an Avril crowd. So what is the difference between these two personas?

Hannah Montana certainly is more teen power-pop, and Miley Cyrus has a slightly more refined, mature sound. Which is better? Both. I'll admit that I was drawn to the Hannah Montana album first, but now the "Meet Miley" album has caught my attention. Fun songs like "East Northumberland High" whose infectious chorus reminds teens that there is life after high school as Miley sings, "You're my type of guy I guess if I was stuck in East Northumberland High for the rest of my life but people change thank God I did." Miley (Destiny Hope) actually wrote most of the songs on the "Meet Miley Cyrus" CD, which is refreshing to know, and quite an accomplishment for this 14 year old. She happened to write a very notable cut, "Let's Dance," which has a Spanish-influenced vibe in its rhythm and guitar arrangements.

If you are looking for the "next Hilary Duff" look no more, yet I think Miley has more personality and spunk. This dual CD release should not be taken lightly nor seen as a Disney-star release. Miley Cyrus is the next... Miley Cyrus. Look out folks, she's here to stay, and this album proves it through and through.

Paris-Paris Hilton[2006]

"Though I hate paris hilton so much,I'think her single 'nothing in' .. is not bad"

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Reality show star, amateur porn hobbyist and regular party fixture; hotel heiress Paris Hilton has decided she would also like to try her hand at being a pop singer. Just because you suspect she hasn't had any formal musical training, never paid dues by belting her heart out with the Mickey Mouse Club, or that she quite possibly bought her way into this whole racket on an expensive whim shouldn't stop you from spending a few frothy minutes with her opening shot, Paris. The single "Stars Are Blind" has a nice breezy faux-reggae vibe, producer Scott Storch sprinkles several tracks with his billion-dollar beats and there's even a tuneless version of "Do Ya Think of Sexy" that actually makes the original sound good. Pulling that off takes some talent, right? – Aidin Vaziri

[2006] Piece by Piece - Katie Melua [Mp3 Download]

|

Review by Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
Fans of bluesy jazz-pop crooners Norah Jones and Joss Stone need to sit up and take notice of Katie Melua. Following up on the success of “Call off the Search” (2003), her much anticipated second album doesn’t disappoint, and the twelve gorgeous tracks are guaranteed to mellow you to perfection.

Released since September 2005 in Europe, the Brits have a nine month jump on the USA, but finally this baby has arrived stateside amidst much rejoicing and celebration. Originally from Georgia (the former USSR, not the peachy place) and now settled in the UK, Katie’s sultry voice curls around your speakers and nestles comfortably against your eardrums, and even though I’m no fan of either jazz or blues, I thoroughly enjoyed this album from the first listen.

First single “Nine Million Bicycles” is an excitingly different and unforgettable track that starts with a simple truth: “There are nine million bicycles in Beijing / That's a fact / It's a thing we can't deny / Like the fact that I will love you till I die.” The music is hauntingly beautiful, perfectly matched by Katie’s clean, clear vocals.

Although every track is a winner, there are those that cry out for more attention, namely “Just Like Heaven” from the movie soundtrack of the same name; the social commentary of “Spider’s Web”; bouncy opener “Shy Guy” and the passionately performed title track; but let’s not forget the cover of the Canned Heat 1960’s hit “On the Road Again” and the catchy “Halfway Up the Hindu Kush”. “Thank You, Stars” is another perfect song, and to be honest, I should be recommending every song on this album.

“Piece by Piece” is highly recommended for fans of blues, jazz, pop and intelligent yet romantic music, and that’s no exaggeration.

[2004]Call off the Search - Katie Melua [Mp3 Download]

|

Review by Nasser Alqatami @Amazon.com
In the past couple of years, genre revivals have been more than evident. Soul, rock and pop have all had a call-back from the past. The most recent genre to receive the modern facelift is easy listening. With Norah Jones getting so much recognition for her debut, it seems that the queen of laze should be credited for her efforts. Even with all its disappointments and utter lack of quality, Jones' Come Away With It won five Grammies and myriad of loving critics. However, everyone seemed to forget KD Lang's previous efforts, such as the classy Drag and the effervescent Invincible Summer, both albums that delivered easy listening with a modern edge.
Of course, after a revival has proven its success, an influx is bound to follow. Currently Jamie Cullum, Michael Buble and, our subject, Katie Melua all hope to carry the same flag.
It is a musical crime to call Melua "the next Norah Jones" because, quite frankly, this Russian-born chanteuse can easily kick Jones' gluteus maximus. One track on Melua's debut Call off the Search, "Blame It on the Moon," manages to cram more emotion than the entirety of Jones' catalogue.
Moreover, her voice is more direct and less lethargic, as demonstrated on lead single "Closest Thing to Crazy" and the title track.
With her smooth ballads, Melua captures urban life in her anthems of lost love and solitude - it's as if the rush of the city is behind her, but all she could think about is her emotional being on "I Think It's Going to Rain Today."
Other tracks continue in that fashion, with "Belfast" and the country-tinted "Mockingbird."
Then Melua visits the haunting with the closing track "Lilac Wine," which closes off the complete effort with a satisfactory note.
"My Aphrodisiac Is You" could have been eliminated as a b-side along with "Tiger in the Night," however, standout tracks like the magnificent somber of "Crawling up a Hill," all with a London attitude, make up for the mishap.
Melua is the one to look out for. Whether it is a drenching or dry song, when it comes to easy listening, this eighteen year old has got it going on.

[2006] Konvicted - Akon [Mp3 Download]

Review by Amanda Richards(Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
This second album from Akon is a genre-bending collection of R&B and Hip Hop tracks and lots of ballads. Singing with passion and "konviction", he returns with that unmistakable accent and international musical flavor that propelled his debut album to multi-platinum status.

The first single "Smack That" is an infectiously catchy dance track, and having a re-energized Eminem as a guest artiste won't hurt it's chances at all. The second single "I Wanna Love You" (or the version with the more explicit title) features Snoop Dogg, where Snoop is ready for a little action, and Akon is looking for a relationship, just like his pal T-Pain.

However, if R&B ballads are more your thing, there are some excellent ones on this album, such as "The Rain", "Never Took the Time" (one of the best tracks on the album), the reggae-beat "Mama Africa", "I Can't Wait", and the retro-soul track "Tired of Runnin'"

For mid-tempo fans there's the down to earth "Gangsta Bop", "Blown Away" (featuring Styles P.) and the bonus track "Gringo". If its dance tracks you're after, you'll also like "Shake Down", but this being a more introspective album there's not much room for dancing.

This album contains explicit lyrics, and the unfortunate thing is that the profanity doesn't complement an otherwise very good album. A good buy for someone who likes R & B ballads and doesn't give a #### about profanity.

[2005] The Story Goes - Craig David [Mp3 Download]

|

Review by Amanda Richards(Georgetown, Guyana) @Amazon.com
Englishman Craig David sticks to familiar hunting ground with "The Story Goes", his third album of R&B smoothies. Easy on the eyes with his arched eyebrows and carefully groomed facial hair, David also sounds as good as ever, particularly on the single "All the Way".

The best song on the album is "Don't Love You No More (I'm Sorry)", other picks being "One Last Dance" which reminds me of his hit song "Rise and Fall"; "Unbelievable"; "Do You Believe in Love" and "Hypnotic"

Even though the album is packed with smooth R&B songs and one upbeat track "Just Chillin'", it would be nice if he would dig down to his Caribbean roots every once in a while (his father is Grenadian, his mother Jamaican) and produce some surprises. Still, one can never get too much of that sexy voice sending shivers up and down your spine.
