Seemingly in tandem with China's growth as an economic player, a steady stream of releases of Chinese music, often displaying some kind of interaction with the West, has been appearing on the market. The Western influence, of course, is not new. Anyone who remembers the Chinese folk music beloved by the Maoists cannot fail to have been struck by the degree of Western harmony present in many of the arrangements. (Of course, that shouldn't have been a surprise, either, given the origins of Communism itself.) This release from Denmark's OUR label is both highly listenable and fascinating in terms of the cultural meeting points it represents. Chinese bamboo flutist Chen Yue and Danish guitarist Lars Hannibal take as a point of departure the fact that, however inscrutable they may appear to each other, Chinese traditional music and European concert music meet in the emphasis each places on melody, greater than in most of the world's other musical traditions. Review by Matt Collar @ allmusic.com Awake Live finds classical crossover vocalist Josh Groban performing on tour in support of his 2006 studio album, Awake. While that album perfectly showcased Groban's knack for epic, deeply moving adult contemporary and classical pop, like many of his studio efforts it was somewhat hemmed in by the hermetically sealed nature of the recording studio and didn't quite capture Groban's burnished, mythically romantic persona. Fortunately, Awake Live manages to best its studio counterpart with an airy, stadium feel that allows both Groban and his backing ensemble to truly soar musically. Backed by a full pop band replete with orchestral and choir members, Groban is free to let loose on the mike and the crowd reacts in kind. Never bombastic or garish, Groban is nonetheless a powerhouse vocalist and dewy pop performer who elicts audible screams from his audience. Framed by technically adroit and sweeping cinematic arrangements, Groban simply can't lose on-stage, and the result is an album that finally lives up to his gargantuan talent Track List 01. Mai 02. Review by Jonathan Widran @ allmusic.com The liner notes to the powerful tenor's overwhelmingly emotional debut begin with the assertion that "Russell Watson is a freak." Well, he looks like a normal 27-year-old from a working-class town in England, but what makes him "freaky" is having such an intensely powerful voice at such a young age (and his grip of operatic Italian is a bit unusual, too). Most likely, the promotional efforts -- which find the handsome singer looking like he's in a GQ ad -- will focus on getting this classic opera material to be heard and appreciated by a younger crowd. The concept here is "opera with a twist," a happy idea where "Nessun Dorma" and "Amor Ti Vieta" play comfortably alongside pop standards like Freddie Mercury's 1992 Olympic theme "Barcelona" (a rock-influenced duet with Shaun Ryder) and "Vienna," a number two hit for Ultravox in 1981. Compared to his effortless tackling of so much challenging material -- not to mention the beautiful swells by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra -- a cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" comes across as a bit staid, but it's still a version that brings out as much emotion as possible. Other featured material includes "Nella Fantasia," "Ricordo Ancor" (from Captain Corelli's Mandolin), and duets with Maire Brennan and Cleopatra Higgins. Review by Zac Johnson New age neo-classicists Libera established their artistic niche by updating choral pieces with ethereal electronic orchestration and theatrical musical sweeps on their self-titled debut album, and the 2001 release Luminosa continues these themes. In interpreting Handel, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, and Debussy among others, director and producer Robert Prizeman is working from a base of some of the finest compositions in history, so it is no surprise that the pieces are as moving as they are. The alternately haunting and embracing "Ave Maria," assisted greatly by the almost impossibly angelic vocals of soloist Steven Geraghty, swirls through imagined marble halls, echoing brightly through Prizeman's production, while the title track reverberates with delicate harmonies and intricate harp-based orchestration. While some listeners may trouble themselves by asking exactly which elements are organic and which are synthesized, those who can let slip the reins of analysis and release themselves into the music will be gently swept away. His soundtrack for the award-winning movie The Mission includes music in the Andes/South American style performed with the group Incantation, notably on "On Earth as It Is in Heaven." The initial effort in what's become an ongoing collaboration between filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore and composer Ennio Morricone (in this instance assisted by his son Andrea) remains one of the Italian musician's most internationally beloved works. The bittersweet tale of a young boy's friendship with the local cinema projectionist and the profound, almost magical influence the movies have on both their lives won the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and the Best Foreign Film Oscar, and netted Morricone a BAFTA (U.K. equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Score. In the late '90s, the music also received one of America's other great "honors"--it was adapted for a car commercial!
