Eva cassidy - Somewhere (2008)

|

Twelve years after her untimely death, the gifted eclectic vocalist Eva Cassidy continues to provide an object lesson on just how a song--any song--should be sung. SOMEWHERE is the latest posthumous release of previously unreleased recordings recorded by the Canadian singer in the '90s, including the title track, a rare Cassidy original which closes the album in a Broadway-like orchestral flourish. Overall, the otherwise spare production sounds highly contemporary. The crack backing band and/or lone accompanying acoustic guitar are fresh and energetic as the always soulful Cassidy tackles a rootsy, characteristically varied set, from Dolly Parton's "Coat Of Many Colors" and Willie Nelson's "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" to Aretha Franklin's "Chain Of Fools" and "Won't Be Long," with time out for traditional folk songs like Robert Burns's "My Love Is Like a Red Rose" and John Renbourn's "A Bold Young Farmer." It's a moving testament to an artist cut down much too soon in her career and in life.

Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet (2002)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
If it didn't follow Glitter, the gold standard for diva implosions in the early 21st century, Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet would simply be her worst album, but since it was rushed out in late 2002 in an effort to mask that disaster, to treat it as if it never happened, it achieves a special kind of grandeur -- it's a botched attempt to restore a career after a botched attempt at a crossover. Of course, the Carey party line, including her new label Island (who has sponsored her vanity imprint, MonarC), claims her lone Virgin album, Glitter, shouldn't be considered an official Mariah album since it was a soundtrack, but not only does that theory not hold water (perhaps Purple Rain shouldn't be considered a Prince album, then?), it signals that everybody realizes that Glitter wasn't just a disaster, but that her whole ghetto-fabulous trip of the late '90s eroded her core MOR audience. So, with Charmbracelet, the backpedalling is immediately evident, from the demure photos gracing the artwork (the tight shorts of Rainbow are long gone) and the first single/opening track "Through the Rain," a slow ballad designed as "Vision of Love" meets "Hero." Mariah is back in the adult contemporary camp, no longer trying to prove that she's real. She hasn't completely abandoned hip-hop, but whenever it rears its head on Charmbracelet, it's utterly jarring, whether it's Jay-Z's and Freeway's guest spots on "You Got Me," the club-ready groove of "You Had Your Chance" (built on the same bassline as "Nuthin' but a G Thang"), or the blatant rewrite of Cam'ron's "Oh Boy" on "Boy (I Need You)" (he may endorse it with a cameo, yet the sampled vocal hook remains singularly annoying no matter how its presented), or the crackling vinyl used as ambient noise on "Irresistible," or the distracting use of dripping water as percussion on "I Only Wanted." Weirdly enough, even these detours are nothing more than flourishes -- window-dressing on songs that remain firmly in the middle of the road, since that's where the sales are, or at least where Mariah's aging fan base is. This, of course, is not a problem, since she's done hip-hop-influenced dance tunes and ballads very well before. What is a problem is that there are no good songs on this record outside of Def Leppard's power ballad classic "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," which isn't even covered all that well. What is a greater problem is that Mariah's voice is shot, sounding in tatters throughout the record. Whenever she sings, there's a raspy whistle behind her thin voice and she strains to make notes throughout the record. She cannot coo or softly croon, nor can she perform her trademark gravity-defying vocal runs. Her voice is damaged, and there's not a moment where it sounds strong or inviting. That alone would be disturbing, but since the songs are formless and the production bland -- another reason why the hip-hop announces itself, even though it's nowhere near as pronounced as it has been since Butterfly -- her tired voice becomes the only thing to concentrate on, and it's a sad, ugly thing, making an album that would merely have been her worst into something tragic

Mariah Carey - Glitter (2001)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allumusic.com
It wasn't supposed to be this way. Mariah Carey's first album for Virgin Records was supposed to be a triumph, an album that confirmed her status as pop's reigning diva, while serving as the soundtrack to a film that proved her crossover status was every bit as potent as that of her unexpected arch-rival Jennifer Lopez. Instead, Glitter proved to be an utter meltdown -- the pop equivalent of Chernobyl. It's hard not to sympathize with everybody involved, actually, from Mariah herself, to all the musicians and producers involved in this and the film, plus the label that shelled out millions of dollars for a proven quantity that suddenly stopped delivering the goods. Because Glitter is a catastrophe -- it captures Mariah on a downturn of creativity and popularity, just when she needs to shine the brightest, and then it was paired with an extremely public emotional breakdown, highlighted by a bizarre appearance on TRL, where she was seemingly dressed only in a T-shirt and handing out Popsicles, plus a scarily suicidal message posted and then quickly deleted from her website. Poor Mariah! Poor Virgin! Who could have predicted this pop perfect storm? And, when you're seeing it unfold, or listening to it unspool, it's hard not to be shocked by the miscalculation of every aspect of Glitter. Superficially, it's not that all far removed from her last Columbia album, Rainbow, but if that record illustrated the freeing effect of her divorce from Tommy Motolla, this album shows that Mariah needs some guiding force, something to keep her on track. Otherwise, she sinks into gormless ballads, covers of early-'80s funk tunes that sound exactly like the originals, hip-hop funk that plays plastic and stiff. This touches on everything Mariah tried before, but nothing works -- not the oversinging, not the sentimental, not the desperate attempts for street cred. If she indeed was paranoid about Lopez's career and success, as certain tabloid reports indicated, she shouldn't have made a record that seems to ape On the 6 the way that album slavishly followed prime Mariah. It's an embarrassment, one that might have been easier to gawk at if its creator wasn't so close to emotional destruction at the time of release.

Mariah Carey - Rainbow (1999)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Mariah Carey claims Rainbow, her first album since divorcing Tommy Mottola, "chronicles my emotional roller coaster ride of the past year," but less subjective listeners could be forgiven for viewing it as simply another Mariah Carey album. After all, all the elements are in place -- the crossover dance hits, the ballads, the cameos, the hip producers, the weird cover choice from the early '80s. But dig a little deeper, and her words ring true. Rainbow is the first Carey album where she's written personal lyrics, and allusions to her separation from Mottola are evident throughout the album, even if it doesn't really amount to the "story" she mentions in the liner notes. As appropriate for any introspective album, it's a bit ballad-heavy, which makes Rainbow seem a little samey. Yet that's not the only reason the record has a weird sense of déjà vu, since this follows the same formula as its two predecessors, distinguished primarily by her newfound fondness for flashing flesh. That repetition isn't necessarily a problem, since she does formula very well, managing to appeal to both housewives as well as b-boys. Rainbow proves that she can still pull off that difficult balancing act, but it's hard not to be a little disappointed that she'd didn't shake the music up a little bit more -- after all, it would have been a more effective album if the heartbreak, sorrow, and joy that bubbles underneath the music were brought to the surface.

Mariah Carey - Butterfly (1997)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Upon its release, Butterfly was interpreted as Mariah Carey's declaration of independence from her ex-husband (and label president) Tommy Mottola, and to a certain extent, that's true. Butterfly is peppered with allusions to her troubled marriage and her newfound freedom, and the music is supposed to be in tune with contemporary urban sounds instead of adult contemporary radio. Nevertheless, it feels like a Mariah Carey album, which means that it's a collection of hit singles surrounded by classy filler. What is surprising about Butterfly is the lack of up-tempo dance-pop. Apart from the Puffy Combs-produced "Honey," Butterfly is devoted to ballads, and while they are all well-crafted, many of them blend together upon initial listening. Subsequent plays reveal that Carey's vocals are sultrier and more controlled than ever, and that helps "Butterfly," "Break Down," "Babydoll," and the Prince cover, "The Beautiful Ones," rank among her best; also, the ballads do have a stronger urban feel than before. Even though Butterfly doesn't have as many strong singles as Daydream, it's one of her best records, illustrating that Carey is continuing to improve and refine her music, which makes her a rarity among her '90s peers.

01. Honey

Mariah Carey - Daydream (1995)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Mariah Carey certainly knows how to construct an album. Positioning herself directly between urban R&B with tracks like "Fantasy," and adult contemporary with songs like "One Sweet Day," a duet with Boyz II Men, Carey appeals to both audiences equally because of the sheer amount of craft and hard work she puts into her albums. Daydream is her best record to date, featuring a consistently strong selection of songs and a remarkably impassioned performance by Carey. A few of the songs are second-rate -- particularly the cover of Journey's "Open Arms" -- but Daydream demonstrates that Carey continues to perfect her craft and that she has earned her status as an R&B/pop diva.

Mariah Carey - Music Box (1993)

|

Review by Ron Wynn @ allmusic.com
Mariah Carey has been stung by critical charges that she's all vocal bombast and no subtlety, soul or shading. Her solution was to make an album in which her celebrated octave-leaping voice would be downplayed and she could demonstrate her ability to sing softly and coolly. Well, she was partly successful; she trimmed the volume on Music Box. Unfortunately, she also cut the energy level; Carey sounds detached on several selections. She scored a couple of huge hits, "Hero" and "Dreamlover," where she did inject some personality and intensity into the leads. Most other times, Carey blended into the background and let the tracks guide her, instead of pushing and exploding through them. It was wise for Carey to display other elements of her approach, but sometimes excessive spirit is preferable to an absence of passion.

Christina Aguilera - Stripped (2002)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
According to Christina Aguilera, the title of her second album, Stripped, refers to her emotions and not her body, but the topless photograph of her on the cover suggests otherwise. Most things about Stripped suggest sex, actually, since Xtina -- as she calls herself in a handful of interviews accompanying the release of the album -- never hesitates to put her body, her piercings, and recently liberated sexual beliefs on display throughout her hyper-sexual, convoluted sophomore effort. Like any diva, Christina believes her trials and tribulations are inherently more fascinating than anybody else's and, like any diva, she has an inflated sense of self-importance, defiantly strutting on the "Stripped Intro" that she's "sorry you can't define me/sorry I break the mold." What she's referring to is anybody's guess, since she hasn't exactly defied expectations since her last album -- releasing a Christmas album and a Spanish-language record of your debut ain't exactly breaking the mold: it is the mold. Plus, Stripped clearly has its origins in the sound of two of Christina's teen pop contemporaries -- the teasing sexiness of Britney Spears and the wonderful, gonzo dance-rock confessionals of Pink, who truly did break the mold with M!ssundaztood. Since Aguilera spent so much time working on the album, tearing through a seemingly countless number of producers, she seems desperate to not just catch-up with these two, but surpass them in the sex and confessions, breaking it down so they become the same thing, while adding a strong hip-hop undercurrent throughout all the songs. And the end result is utterly bizarre, surpassing Mariah Carey's Glitter as the modern-day standard for musical immolation while rivaling The Teaches of Peaches in its sheer carnality. Where Peaches always is in control of her sexuality, using it as a weapon and a joke in equal measures, Christina is overwhelmed by the reaction of others to her sexuality, putting it on equal ground with her voice, which remains a remarkably powerful instrument, especially since she's toned down the scale-running histrionics from her debut. If she's mastered her vocals, she's still desperately searching for her artistic voice, placing too much emphasis on club and street-level R&B, which fit her poorly (why was "Dirrty," a non-song that requires less range than the slinky sexiness of "I'm a Slave 4 U," the first single?), when she needs full-blown songs. There are some here, though, most notably the Linda Perry collaboration "Beautiful," which was rush-released as a second single, but the ceaseless 70-minute running time and seemingly endless 20 songs mean that individual moments are lost and the big picture remains. And that big picture is that of an artist who has grown up too fast, while the sound is that of an artist who's given too much freedom too early and hasn't yet figured out what to do with it.

Christina Aguilera - My Kind of Christmas (2000)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
The second punch in a double whammy of stopgap releases in the fourth quarter of 2000, My Kind of Christmas appeared on the shelves two months after Mi Reflejo, Christina's Latin reworking of her debut album. My Kind of Christmas actually has more new material than Mi Reflejo, and Aguilera responds in kind, turning in passionate performances throughout the 11-song album. She can teeter on the edge of being too passionate, belting out when she should lay back, but the power of her voice, no matter how diva-esque she may be, remains remarkable; she needs to learn restraint, but she's clearly a better singer than her peers. Of course, My Kind of Christmas remains a holiday album, filled with covers of standards (from "Oh Holy Night" to "The Christmas Song" to "Merry Christmas, Baby") and a handful of obligatory new songs. None of the new songs are knockouts, but "Christmas Time" and "This Year" are pretty solid pieces of dance-pop, even if the marvelously titled "Xtina's Xmas" (easily the best name of any new holiday song of 2000) is a 90-second collage trifle that doesn't live up to its promise. But, hey -- filler is part of a holiday record, and there's actually not too much of it here. Instead, it's pretty tight, entertaining seasonal dance-pop. It may not add too much to Christina's catalog, but it does suggest that she may not be a mere one-album wonder.

Christina Aguilera - Mi Reflejo (2000)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
When Christina Aguilera's eponymous debut reached multi-platinum status in the summer of 1999, the charts were also ruled by the Latin pop explosion, headed by Ricky Martin. Since Aguilera had Ecuadoran heritage, recording a Latin pop album was appropriate, even if she didn't know how to speak the language. Besides, a Latin album was an easy way to buy time for an artist waiting to produce an eagerly awaited sequel to a blockbuster album. So, she knocked out the record that became Mi Reflejo in 1999 and 2000, between tours and video shoots. She learned the words phonetically, but she already knew most of the melodies, since the bulk of the album was Spanish-language versions of songs on the debut album. In other words, it was a mirror image of the debut -- her Spanish reflection, as it were. This results in an album that is just a little too familiar, even if it's classy and well-produced and spiked with a couple of new tunes that hold their own with the holdovers. Even so, it's hard to view Mi Reflejo as anything other than a bit of a pleasant holding pattern; it's enjoyable as it spins, but it doesn't add anything new to her music, since it's just the old music in new clothing.

Giorgia Fumanti - From My Heart (2007)

|

Review by Jonathan Widran @ allmusic.com
Frequently presented as the female Andrea Bocelli, the multi-lingual Italian born soprano offered a remarkably beautiful and diverse collection for her major-label affiliated debut (after 2004's independently released Like a Dream). Singing English impeccably and without an accent, she not only pays glorious homage to Barbra Streisand on "I've Dreamed of You," she nearly surpasses her idol's subtle emotional power. Giorgia Fumanti also charms in her own language throughout the disc, on the soaring and percussive, choir enhanced "Espiritu," her heartbreaking and flawless translation of Sting's "Fields of Gold" (here titled "Campi d'Oro") and especially on three themes by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. Fumanti shows off her stunning high range over the orchestral swells of "Your Love (Theme from Once Upon a Time in the West)" and the tender and romantic "A Rose Among Thorns" (from The Mission). Her soothing and dreamy twist on "Cinema Paradiso" completes this Morricone trilogy with magical sweetness. Aside from her vocal range and dynamics, the most remarkable aspect of this collection is the way she adapts so gracefully to both monstrously busy and sparse arrangements. The bigger productions by producer Craig Leon are exciting, but the tracks that endure are the ones where all the power emanates from the emotions Fumanti draws from a voice that ultimately defies easy adjectives.

Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey (1990)

|

Review by Ashley S. Battel @ allmusic.com
This extremely impressive debut is replete with smooth-sounding ballads and uplifting dance/R&B cuts. Carey convincingly seizes many opportunities to display her incredible vocal range on such memorable tracks as the popular "Vision of Love" (featured during her television debut on The Arsenio Hall Show, an appearance noted by many as her formal introduction to stardom), the energetic "Someday," and the moody sounds of the hidden treasure "Vanishing." With this collection of songs acting as a springboard for future successes, Carey establishes a strong standard of comparison for other breakthrough artists of this genre.

Mariah Carey - Emotions (1991)

|

Review by Ashley S. Battel @ allmusic.com
A strong follow-up to Carey's self-titled debut album, Emotions puts to rest any concern of a "sophomore jinx." The same mix of dance/R&B/ballads that gave Carey's debut such tremendous auditory appeal can be found with equal strength on this release, indicating that placing firm belief in the notion of "Why fool with success?" may, in fact, have its merits. Most notably, the gospel influences of "If It's Over" (with music co-written by Carole King), the yearning cries for a lost love in "Can't Let Go," and the catchy, upbeat title track, all serve to send the listener on a musical journey filled with varying emotions. However, the one emotion that prevails upon completion of the album is definitely a positive one - satisfaction!

Track List
01. Emotions

Coco Lee - Just No Other Way (2000)

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Prior to the spring 2000 release of her English-language debut Just No Other Way in America, Coco Lee was a superstar in Asia -- so popular, she was often dubbed the Japanese Madonna. If that's true, then it's the Madonna of the late '80s instead of the late '90s, since this is unabashed dance-club music, not the cerebral techno-pop fusion of Ray of Light. And that's a compliment, by the way, given that it's harder to pull off convincing mainstream dance-pop than it seems. Though Just No Other Way isn't perfect -- like many dance-pop albums, it's rather uneven -- it is nevertheless appealing, thanks to Lee's solid performances. She's not overly charismatic, which may mean that some of the less distinguished material never gets stamped with personality, but that's OK because she never oversings or shows off the way some dance-pop divas do. Instead, she delivers the right performance for the song, whether it's an uptempo cut or a ballad like the title track. Much of this recalls Jennifer Lopez's debut album -- the opening cut "Do You Want My Love" is scarily reminiscent of Lopez's first hit, "If You Had My Love" -- but in the best possible way, since it shares the same inclination for well-crafted, melodic, and danceable club-pop. If Lee doesn't really seem like a superstar on Just No Other Way, that's due more to the occasionally pedestrian material, not her performances. Throughout it all, she is engaging and charming, singing professionally yet with some personality. Consequently, it's hard to dislike the album, even if it doesn't quite deliver the musical goods nor quite match her own talents. There are enough moments here that prove that Lee's popularity in Asia is deserved and it's just enough to not only be satisfied, but to await her next record.

Spice Girls - Greatest Hits (2007)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Well, of course the Spice Girls needed a greatest-hits album. They'd need one even if they weren't reuniting for a world tour that is as heavily hyped if not as anticipated as Led Zeppelin's (which of course is just a one-time shot, right?), as they were a singles-oriented group without a singles album in their catalog. And so, 2007's Greatest Hits, which has everything you know plus a few songs you don't and no left-field choices (if you were hoping that "Bumper to Bumper" would gain its rightful place as one of their finest, you're out of luck!). The songs have aged exactly as you thought they might: "Wannabe" is still too familiar, "2 Become 1" too drippy, "Spice Up Your Life" plain ridiculous, but "Say You'll Be There" is still sexy, "Stop" is as awesome a slice of obligatory British Tamla/Motown as you'll get, and "Goodbye" is actually a pretty good finale, while the rest is forgettable, as are the two new songs, the sleepy "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" -- which isn't as self-referential or clever as its title suggests -- and the peppy "Voodoo." But music was always secondary to the Spice Girls' girl power image: they had enough great singles to be huge for a couple years but not enough to be more than a quicksilver pop culture phenomenon and that brief moment in time is documented better on this Greatest Hits than any of their three albums. [Like any big-budget release in the late 2000s, Greatest Hits was available in a variety of formats all over the world upon the time of its release. First, the set was available in three incarnations in the U.K. and Europe: as a single CD, as a set including a DVD with all their videos -- which, frankly, is as tempting a collection as the CD, if not more -- then a box set containing those two discs, plus a karaoke CD and a disc of remixes. In the U.S., this Greatest Hits was initially available only at Victoria's Secret, then was available at other retailers in early 2008.]

Spice Girls - Spiceworld (1997)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
The Spice Girls, as well as their managers and songwriters, are nothing if not clever, and Spiceworld, the group's second album, illustrates exactly how sharp they are. Conventional wisdom dictates that Spiceworld should be a weak facsimile of Spice, which itself featured a handful of great singles surrounded by filler. Conventional wisdom, in this case, is wrong -- Spiceworld is a better record than its predecessor, boasting a more consistent (and catchier) set of songs and an intoxicating sense of fun. Instead of merely rewriting Spice, Spiceworld consolidates and expands the group's style, adding Latin flourishes ("Spice Up Your Life"), kitschy blues ("The Lady Is a Vamp"), and stomping, neo-Motown blue-eyed soul in the vein of Culture Club ("Stop"). The girls -- Mel C. in particular -- are actually turning into good vocalists, and each song plays to their strengths, giving each Spice a chance to shine. Best of all, each song has a strong melody and a strong, solid beat, whether it's a ballad or a dance number. It's a pure, unadulterated guilty pleasure and some of the best manufactured mainstream dance-pop of the late '90s.

Kansas - Point Of Know Return (1977)

Review by Robert Taylor @ allmusic.com
This is the definitive Kansas recording and includes their most famous tune, "Dust in the Wind." The band is in peak form and also churned out the single "Point of Know Return," which is still played daily on classic rock stations. While their pop-oriented approach and standard rock guitar sound helped define the classic rock sound of the '70s, careful listening reveals that this band's talent goes beyond colleagues such as Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Boston. Their arrangements and time signatures more accurately reflect the music of Yes and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. "Paradox" and "The Spider" are both excellent examples of their progressive approach. Unfortunately, the band always struggled to maintain a healthy balance of progression combined with pop. That made for such awkward moments here as "Portrait (He Knew)" and "Lightning's Hand." Yet despite the minor inconsistencies and a dated sound, their interplay and superior musicianship make this both an essential classic rock and progressive rock recording.

Kelly Sweet - We Are One (2007)

|

Biography by Megan Frye @ allmusic.com
Soft-voiced pop vocalist Kelly Sweet was born into a creative and musical family. In their home in Cape Cod, MA, she was raised by her father, a jazz pianist, and her artist mother. Learning to play notes on the piano before she could walk, Sweet sang live for an audience for the first time at age four at the Cape Cod Conservatory. After her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Utah, where she began working harder honing her craft. Around age 14, Sweet and her mother rented out their home in Utah and began touring the western United States for two years, working to get Sweet her touring wings, as well as to get her name out. The hard work paid off and she ended up opening for Kenny Loggins in Las Vegas, and also sang the national anthem three different times before L.A. Lakers NBA games. She met up with producer, arranger, and songwriter Mark Portmann (Celine Dion) in the summer of 2004. The two began writing songs together, resulting in the turning point of her career into a professional musician, and she was eventually signed to Razor & Tie Records. Sweet's debut, We Are One, surfaced in March 2007.

Linda Ronstadt, Aaron Neville - Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind (1989)

|

Amazon.com essential recording
An album that defines virtually everything that is right about adult contemporary pop--and yes, there are a few things--Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind contains lush, orchestrated arrangements of songs by first-rate tunesmiths such as Jimmy Webb, Eric Kaz, Paul Carrack, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill, Isaac Hayes, and Karla Bonoff. Four cuts, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Much," feature duets between Ronstadt (still singing with power and assurance even at the top of her range) and angel-voiced Aaron Neville. Other highlights include "Adios," with multitracked background vocals by Brian Wilson, and the title song, which is driven to new heights by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. Beautiful stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

Aaron Neville - Bring It On Home...The Soul Classics (2006)

|

Amazon.com
Approach Aaron Neville's Bring it on Home ... the Soul Classics with anything but an open heart and you've missed the point. This is a serious CD, at once mournful, humble, and joyous, with no shortage of moments that recall the terribleness of Hurricane Katrina. One way of processing it is as a cataloging of classic songs that helped Neville's fellow New Orleanians soldier through: opener "Rainy Night in Georgia" with jazzman Chris Botti wrings beauty from soaking-wet despair, "Stand By Me" turns its heel on pleading in favor of promise-making, and "People Get Ready," with David Sanborn and brother Art, is a chill-sending reminder of how unity and perseverance can trump tragedy. Viewed from another lens, Soul Classics is Neville's attempt at climbing aboard the late-career, classic-covers bandwagon while weaving his bayou-soul heritage into the picture. The trouble with that theory, though, is that it feels like so much more. His voice flutters alongside Mavis Staple's on "Respect Yourself" with completely uncontrived tenderness, and Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" becomes a meditation on stillness and ease that befits a boulder-sized lump in the throat. A tossed-together concept album this is not; a reflection of a soul man gifted with the ability to spin epic, unyielding sorrow into grace is more like it. --Tammy La Gorce

Laura Pausini - Io Canto (2006)

|

Amazon.com
Italian, Spanish, or English: Laura Pausini's edgy, electric vocals are some of the most vibrant in contemporary pop. The endearing diva has been around for more than a decade, but the 2004 disc Escucha found her enjoying a newfound musical independence and worldwide success. Yo Canto is a long-brewing project dear to Pausini's heart: a collection of Italian pop covers spanning her lifetime. As with most of Pausini's releases, the disc is available in Italian and in Spanish. Yo Canto veers from dramatic balladry to fiery rock moments, anchored by Pausini's swooping, powerful vocal work. Several songs will be unfamiliar to fans outside of Italy, but it hardly matters. Pausini makes every moment her own, from the triumphant title track to the bittersweet "Escribeme." She's joined by international rock star Juanes during the lovely, lilting "Mi Libre Cancion." And fellow Italian pop idol Tiziano Ferro joins in for a new take on his brooding 2003 hit, "No Me Lo Puedo Explicar." There are many moments of sublime loveliness here. In other words, just another day in the musical life of Pausini. --Joey Guerr

Martina McBride - Emotion (1999)

|

Amazon.com
Liquid-eyed Martina McBride finds herself in a holding pattern after 1997's Evolution, unable to break completely free of country radio's indistinguishably bombastic mandates but also perceptibly champing at the bit to disobey them. The arena-ready country-rock ditties lead her to overreach badly (did it really take three writers to invent the hackneyed "I Love You"?), and the trite power ballads just push her bluster buttons, but when McBride's got good material, she's capable of making music that's quite nearly memorable. "Anything's Better Than Feelin' the Blues" (by Matraca Berg and Randy Scruggs) could be an exciting country single, and the two final tunes, Patty Griffin's "Good Bye" and Gretchen Peters's "This Uncivil War," clearly advance McBride's pop-ballad tendencies with some believable lyrical introspection. Such moments, however, are only brief respites from the overbearing Nashville formula. --Roy Kasten

Shawn Colvin - Cover Girl (1994)

|

Review by William Ruhlmann @ allmusic.com
When Shawn Colvin first turned up playing Greenwich Village folk clubs in the early 1980s, she used to perform a variety of cover songs, often taking rock recordings and re-imagining them for her girl-with-guitar format. When Colvin began recording in the late '80s, however, she concentrated on her own original material. Cover Girl brings her interpretive abilities back into focus. Songs like the Police's "Every Little Thing [He] Does Is Magic" and Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" are the most radical reworkings here, but not the best, perhaps because they depend on their original productions. Colvin is more successful in choosing classic but not well-known songs already in the folk idiom -- Greg Brown's "One Cool Remove," Willis Alan Ramsey's "Satin Sheets," and Rolly Solley's "Killing the Blues." A fan from the old Village days can only lament that she didn't choose to include her version of Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet."

Steps - Steptacular (1999)

|

Amazon.co.uk Review
Following their initial inception in 1997, the five extraordinarily exuberant members of Steps rapidly gravitated to the very peak of the pop pile with an irresistible coalition of infectious melodies, lashings of personality and charismatic sparkle. Following hot on the heels of Step One, this second collection further consolidated the band's position as a seductively up beat Abba for the 1990s. Kicking off with the triple barrelled fusillade of "Tragedy", "After The Love Has Gone" and "Love's Got A Hold On My Heart", Steptacular proceeds into hitherto uncharted areas of down-tempo maturity with the contemplative, heart-string stroking of "You're Everything That Matters To Me" and melancholic introspection of "Since You Took Your Love Away". Yet Steptacular still boasts a rich surfeit of Lisa, Faye, Lee, H and Claire's singular sonic bounce--witness the lush simplicity of 'Say You'll Be Mine', yet another sure step on the stairway to pop heaven. --Ian Fortnam

Steps - Step One (1998)

Amazon.co.uk Review
When he split from his 1980s buddies Stock and Aitken, those who loved pop feared that there would never be another record to come from pop svengali Pete Waterman. Then, out of the blue, came Steps, a five piece who were shockingly group-by-numbers for their bland first single (the aptly titled "5,6,7,8"). Then, with "Last Thing On My Mind", an immense, Abba-like paean to heart-break, the group became whole--an immense camp beast, whose songs kept giving to everyone from Teletubby toddlers to ageing old queens. That the band are singing Waterman's trademark open-sore teen ditties helps ("One For Sorrow"--can you bear the pain?), but what completes the brilliant package is the routines. Each song has an aerobic-like succession of weird hand poses and body-twists that should, if you're being good, be learnt by rote from their videos. But what the hell--come on and do some bad vogueing to this great, bad-but-cool pop. --Charlie Porter
