At only twenty-two, Will Martin has already packed in a lifetime of paying dues. School musicals, playing piano in bars, waiting tables, corporate entertaining, singing in rock bands and on cruise liners to singing the New Zealand National Anthem in front of a sold out All Blacks crowd – Will has done it all. It has all been a lead up to this - “A New World,” his stunning debut album is an epic collection of classical crossover songs. Recorded with a full orchestra, this selection of songs simultaneously reflects Will’s origins and the scope of his unfaltering ambition. “I think that people today seem to be craving a more sophisticated sound,” says Will. “While not all the songs are from traditional repertoire, they are all orchestral and classical in spirit. Take “Going Home” from Dvorak’s “New World Symphony.” It’s a beautiful piece of classical music, but it has been produced as though it was written this year. It has contemporary textures and rhythms, and includes Maori chants with my voice floating on top.” Well-known songs are also featured, including “Into the West” the theme song from “Lord of the Rings” and Ennio Morricone’s “Cinema Paradiso.” Both have been given an orchestral kick, and contrast with the subtle takes on Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and Maori folk song “Hine e Hine.” Will’s debut album is a testament to his belief in the emotion that classical music evokes in people, and the passion it inspires. This dedicated performer with a contagious enthusiasm for his craft intends to continue telling the beautifully emotive stories of the world’s greatest songwriters, whilst pushing the boundaries of the Classical Crossover genre.

Chilly, forced, and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols, and trio of tunes penned by Beyonce Knowles doesn't conjure a single warm and fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with their own trills and off-kilter harmonies, obscuring the songs' simple beauty. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song, a takeoff on the "12 Days of Christmas," without ever explaining why they lopped off four days. The band is shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, like renaming "Carol of the Bells" "Opera Bells" and recasting "Silver Bells" as "Platinum Bells" to reflect their multiplatinum status. But the low point of the record is when Destiny's Child hawk their Hasbro-manufactured dolls in the intro of "Platinum Bells": "Ladies, remember long ago we asked Santa to give us Christmas dolls? This year the dolls are you and me under the tree." Humbug. --Jaan Uhelszki

On the wings of the hit club single "Blue (Da Ba Dee)," the Italian group Eiffel 65's Europop has soared into the ever-fleeting good graces of the dance-pop scene. The song is "a story about a little guy who lives in a blue world," and while it seems that the color of the fella's life was chosen arbitrarily, the real star of this tune is the vocoder effect reintroduced on Cher's megahit single "Believe." Listen to the entire record, though, and you'll hear this gimmick on almost all of the rest of the tracks as well. On first run-through, the one-trick-pony-ness of this effect is off-putting, and yet it is the album's one distinctive element. The songs on Europop live up to the album's broad moniker, skimming the basics of tried-and-true dance-pop ("Living in a Bubble," "Now Is Forever"), techno ("Dub in Life," "Another Race"), and acid house ("Europop"). The group even renders a fairly accurate impression of Depeche Mode-style goth-pop ("Your Clown"). But the tracks rarely deviate from a four-on-the-floor thud, numbing the ears to the songs' otherwise distinguishable qualities. The record is too hard to swallow in one bite; its tracks are much tastier as singles, serving well in a club setting as segues to stronger songs by other artists. --Beth Massa

Their formula is simple enough--equal parts teenage humor and brattiness combined with infectious guitar hooks that just beg to be cranked up on the stereo. But with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, the guys in Blink 182 may have delivered their best album to date, a punk-pop fusion that's so consistent you'll wonder which of the 13 tracks will become radio hits (any has the chance, really). Yes, as with Dude Ranch and Enema of the State, the songs here revolve around falling in love ("The Rock Show," "First Date"), falling out of love ("Online Songs," "Happy Holidays, You Bastard"), and plenty of other ways to kill time while away from school ("Reckless Abandon"). And yes, these guitar-driven songs all pretty much sound the same, but Take Off never gets boring. There's too much nervous energy here, too many slight variations in the arrangements, and too many hilarious lyrics that you won't want to miss. Parents may remember that the Buzzcocks used this same shtick in the late '70s, older siblings may remember that Green Day did it well not so many years ago, but Blink fans know that their band is more clever than anyone else playing today. The bonus tracks are throwaways, but that's OK--the threesome have given us plenty to bop our heads to here. --Jason Verlinde

The old adage that says you can't go home again rings especially true for artists and musicians attempting to return to their artistic roots. Ironically, it's also what makes the Bee Gees' journey back to their '60s sensibilities feel like a gratifying, if unassuming, triumph. Indeed, while the songs here are possessed of the innate soulfulness and melodic flair familiar from their youth, they've wisely allowed disparate musical elements from their dizzying three-decade-plus career to season this collection, giving it a satisfying pan-generational sense that's as rewarding as it is rare. The title track sets the tone, with the brothers trading verses against a spare acoustic guitar and drum-kit backdrop. It's a bracing reminder that the Gibb brothers' locked-in harmony remains one of pop's enduring sonic archetypes. While they've never completely shaken the cultural stereotyping of their late '70s megaplatinum doses of disco fever, there are few remnants of it here, save for the insistent drum loop. Given their longevity and pervasive insider influence, it's sometimes a historical riddle to figure out who's influencing whom, from the distinct ELO-isms of Robin's "She Keeps on Coming" and Maurice's "Man in the Middle" to Barry's singular balladry on "Loose Talk Costs Lives." And lest anyone think it's strictly a '60s-'70s love fest, the Gibbs toss in a good-natured nod to Tin-Pan Alley ("Technicolor Dreams") and even a spirited, if somewhat ham-handed, post-modern romp ("Voice in the Wilderness"). More than anything, it's a record that argues that home is but a state of mind, and that the Bee Gees have learned more than a few things on the way back. --Jerry McCulley

It sounds like the beginning of a story: "So, Slowhand and the King of the Blues were riding in a car ..." If this is a musical journey, it's the kind that rolls down long, empty stretches of country highway at 80 miles an hour, with the top down and the stereo blasting. Clapton and King may be more city than country, but this collection has the relaxed, laid-back feel that only comes from a pair of veterans doing what they do best. What they do here is cover 12 classic blues songs, many of them staples of King's repertoire, so the title of this album makes sense. Whether it's the rollicking rock & roll of the title track, or the acoustic shuffle of "Key to the Highway," or the sweet notes of "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer," a real sense of pleasure comes through on this album, the kind of pleasure one gets from jamming late at night with a good friend. --Genevieve Williams

Pianist/vocalist Diana Krall pays tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio on her Impulse! set. In general, the medium and up-tempo tunes work best, particularly such hot ditties as "I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm," "Frim Fram Sauce," and "Hit That Jive Jack." Krall does not attempt to directly copy Cole much (either pianistically or vocally), although his influence is obviously felt on some of the songs. The slow ballads are actually as reminiscent of Shirley Horn as Cole, particularly the somber "I'm Through With Love" and "If I Had You." Guitarist Russell Malone gets some solo space on many of the songs and joins in on the group vocal of "Hit That Jive Jack," although it is surprising that he had no other opportunities to interact vocally with Krall; a duet could have been delightful. Bassist Paul Keller is fine in support, pianist Benny Green backs Krall's vocal on "If I Had You," and percussionist Steve Kroon is added on one song. Overall, this is a tasteful effort that succeeds.

With this CD, the young Canadian singer/pianist/arranger joins forces with producer Tommy LiPuma, who places his orchestral stamp on eight of the 13 tracks. It is the latest attempt to push Krall to an even wider pop/smooth jazz audience than she already enjoys. After all, Nat Cole, Wes Montgomery, and George Benson, among others, went this route. Wonder if she'd agree the cuts sans strings were more fun and challenging? Krall does get to it with central help from bassists John Clayton and Ben Wolfe, drummers Jeff Hamilton and Lewis Nash, and guitarist Russell Malone, all stellar players. Krall's voice is sweet and sexy. She's also flexible within her range and at times a bit kitschy, mostly the hopeless romantic. On this CD of love songs, it's clear she's cool but very much in love with this music. Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care" and the insistent "Best Thing for You" really click. Favorites are a decent Shearing-esque "Let's Fall in Love" with vibist Larry Bunker; a suave slow bossa on the opening number, "Let's Face the Music"; the lusher-than-lush title track; and especially an incredible horn-fired fanfare intro/outro on the hip "Pick Yourself Up." Some might call this fluff or mush, but it depends solely on your personal taste. This will certainly appeal to Krall's fans, lovers, and lovers at heart.
