New York-based artist Meredith Godrea devised the pseudonym Gregory & the Hawk in 2003 as a means to escape the potential media stereotypes that often accompany female singer/songwriters. Equally proficient on guitar, piano, and violin, Godrea's home recordings found an audience on the Internet, spawning numerous covers recorded by adoring fans and posted on various social websites. Her notorious D.I.Y. work ethic (she sold 15,000 albums independent of a label) which resulted in packed houses and the production of her 2007 full-length debut In Your Dreams, eventually landed her a deal with Fatcat records. Her debut for the label, Moenie & Kitchi, arrived the following year.

What is it about erstwhile '60s rock stars nearing 60 that draws them to standards? Just as Rod Stewart has mined the works of Styne & Cahn and Cole Porter for his bankable (if heavy-handed) Great American Songbook series, so, too, has Linda Ronstadt turned to pop classics in the autumn of her career. Of course, Ronstadt has been here before, having enlisted Nelson Riddle to guide her through three standards collections in the '80s. With Hummin' to Myself, the peripatetic vocalist eschews the robust big-band arrangements that marked What's New and its offspring for small-ensemble treatments of the likes of "Miss Otis Regrets" and "Day Dream." With either Alan Broadbent or Warren Bernhardt at the keys and Bob Mann, Christian McBride, and Lewis Nash making up the rhythm section on most tracks, Ronstadt gets more than capable instrumental support from some seasoned jazz pros, and while she won't make anyone forget Ella Fitzgerald, she brings her distinctive brand of brass to "Never Will I Marry" and "Get Out of Town." Meanwhile, she eases through languid takes of "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and "Cry Me a River," the latter borrowing considerably from Julie London's defining version, but substituting melancholy for London's playful sultriness. --Steven Stolder

Though the mainstream might have all but abandoned Alanis Morrissette since her mid-90s breakthrough as the MTV grunge generation’s Madonna, she has forged on with a handful of albums of a reasonably steely consistency, although even kindly ears would recognize her output since Jagged Little Pill as reduced strength versions of that celebrated album. Its slightly convoluted follow up, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, remains her most intriguing if long-winded work, and with her most recent record (2004’s So Called Chaos) more or less finding peace with itself--filing down the angsty internal dialogues and sounding almost content even at its loudest points--the future seemed to be heading on a downward spiral. But talk about an about turn. With Flavors Of Entanglement the bronco is very much bucking once more, often causing whiplash-inducing stylistic swerves. "Citizen Of The Planet" opens the album, erupting out of eastern strings and a sequenced underlay with blunt, compressed guitars and thumping beats, sweeping through desolate plains previously inhabited by nu metal fantasists Evanescence. The dark tension is upheld through the robotic techno of "Straightjacket" and dark string-laden drum ‘n’ bass of "Moratorium." Landing amid the lonely Tori Amos balladry of "Not As We," Texas-pop of "In Praise Of The Vulnerable Man," and the more typical Alanis fare of "Underneath," this is an often unsettlingly mixed bag achieving varying levels of success, but it is also probably her most emotionally satisfying work for a decade.

Review
That they chose to record, produce and mix their fourth studio album unassisted says a lot about Elbow’s self-assurance. It also says something about the short shrift given them throughout their career – Fiction is their fourth major-label paymaster in seven years, so it’s hardly surprising that the Manchester five piece have learned to be creatively independent.
It’s difficult to understand why Elbow might have so spooked the industry’s horses. Their epic, orchestral rock is complex and ambitious but never smugly clever, personally expressive yet not morbidly self-obsessed, sweetly glum rather than oppressively gloomy. That fans of Radiohead and The Verve haven’t fallen for Elbow’s sophisticated northern soul is a mystery, but their latest effort deserves to trigger a large-scale love affair.
After exploring political themes with 2004’s Cast Of Thousands, here Elbow have reverted to the personal. The Seldom Seen Kid is, like previous LPs, a reflection of the band’s recent experiences– in this case, births, and the death of their friend, Manchester singer-songwriter Bryan Glancy, to whom the title affectionately refers.
The album works as whole - beginning with an eruptive blast of noise and ending with the gentle farewell that is “Friend Of Ours”. In between, Elbow explore life’s big questions, and the emptiness that can lie at the heart of an outwardly successful life. All of this is accomplished with the band’s traditional soft-pawed grace. At times, the band recall Talk Talk, Robert Wyatt and The Blue Nile, but “The Fix” – a comic polka that sees Richard Hawley and Garvey as con men planning a racing scam – is an excellent wild card.
Garvey’s voice is what most distinguishes Elbow, its sweet and scruffy soulfulness projecting real empathy and lyrical wit. “I’ve been working on a cocktail called Grounds for Divorce,” he sings in the single “Grounds For Divorce”. It’s surely one of the best opening lines of any pop song in years – and typical of a record that shows Elbow at the top of their game.

The Last Shadow Puppets are set to play two shows in New York and Los Angeles next week, supporting the release of an exclusive EP release.
The US-only version of 'My Mistakes Were Made For You', an eight-song EP, came out October 21st and will be released on CD on November 4. Tracks on the EP include a live version of 'Paris Summer' (made famous by Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra) featuring Alison Mosshart of The Kills.
The band released their debut album 'The Age Of The Understatement' earlier this year, and performed a number of low-key shows in Manhattan and Brooklyn. In March, the duo recorded all the acoustic tracks from the EP at Avatar Studios in New York.

Assuming former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl dreads the thought of forever being known as "the guy from Kurt Cobain's band," the last thing he'd want to hear is that the debut album from his new band Foo Fighters sounds much like one from the deceased duke of grunge. Unfortunately, Nirvana comparisons are not only inevitable, they're bound to consume the dialog surrounding his quartet entirely. Perhaps it was unavoidable osmosis: Grohl, Foo Fighters' lead singer-guitarist, wrote most of these tunes during breaks from beat-keeping for his former band leader. It's natural that Cobain's knack for balancing hard and fast with musical and melodic would wear off on Grohl, as well as on bandmates Pat Smear (who also played with Nirvana), William Goldsmith, and Nate Mendel (both of Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate). Grohl even unveils vocal cords that tread lightly on Cobain's gorgeous growl. Of course, many Nirvana-be's have tried to capture Cobain & Co.'s teen spirit, and all failed; that Foo Fighters succeed in creating a powerful heavy rock album that's neither noisy nor stale is a measured accomplishment in its own right. So bask in the familiar neo-garage punk (a.k.a. grunge) of "I'll Stick Around," "Oh, George," and "Good Grief," because we certainly won't hear anything from the style's originator in the near future. And, who knows, you might even be surprised by Grohl's own pop chops on the mellow Byrds-like folk rock "Big Me" and catchy rave-up "This Is a Call." The Foo Fighters prove that even if you can't go home again, it sure is comfortable hanging out next door. --Roni Sarig

Riding the momentum of the hit single "Learn to Fly," which hit No. 1 on the modern-rock charts long before this album's release, the Foo Fighters' third record is unarguably its most refined and poppy. The ominous riff that the opens "Stacked Actors" (which sounds like something Kurt Cobain could have hacked out on Nirvana's gnarly In Utero) is pretty much a red herring. The 10 tunes that follow are a succession of hook-laden pop songs tarted up with guitarist-vocalist (and former Nirvana drummer) Dave Grohl's thick guitars and increasingly sugar-sweet vocals. Nearly every cut on There Is Nothing Left to Lose has the potential of following "Learn to Fly" up the charts. The production is big and friendly and songs like "Generator," "Aurora," and "Headwires" just melt in your mouth. And even though the Foo Fighters' latest is seductively sweet in sound, there are just enough rough edges and lyrical angst to keep things interesting. --Adem Tepedelen
