A lot of roads lead to Holly Brook (the singer, not a picnic destination). There's the hip-hop path, on which plenty of next-big-thing predictors got to know her through her collaboration with Fort Minor on The Rising Tide (her haunting chorus on "Where'd You Go" became an instant hit). Then there's the TV path, on which anybody with an ear for pop with staying power could have chosen between a couple of trails: both the NBC show Conviction and the WB series Related have featured her plaintive song "What I Wouldn't Give" off this, her debut. However you reach this piano-propelled 20-year-old star in the making, though, you won't be sorry. In the space of three songs, she recalls a decade's worth of singer-songwriters twice her age, and in an unhurried, stylish way that suggests she's doing it handily. A wrenching Tori Amos vibe weaves through "Again & Again," a track that recalls Shawn Colvin in equal measure; Suzanne Vega circa Solitude Standing surfaces in the vivid short verses of "Saturday"; and Sarah McLachlan seeps out over most of the vocals, but especially those on "Give It Up for You" and the lovely "Cellar Door." Joni Mitchell is the association Brook was going for--she cites her as influence number one--but comparisons with the more obvious mentors can't come as much of a bummer. The Joni connection may surface yet: Like Blood Like Honey is surely a trickle in a long career to come. --Tammy La Gorce

The album was released few days before Dion's concerts in Japan, which were a part of the Taking Chances Tour.
It contains one new track "A World to Believe In" (U.S.A. mix), recorded as an English-Japanese duet with Yuna Ito, which wasn't available on Dion's previous album. Taking Chances includes English version of that song, performed by Céline Dion alone. "A World to Believe In" was released as a single in January 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the Oricon Singles Chart. It was Dion's first appearance on that chart, since "To Love You More" (dance mixes) entered it in April 1999.
Complete Best also includes "To Love You More," which was originally released in October 1995 and became Céline Dion's biggest hit in Japan, topping the singles chart for 4 weeks and selling almost 1.3 million copies. It contains also two others Japan only released singles: "The Power of the Dream" and "Be the Man."
The album was certified gold in March 2008 and to date, 160,000 copies of Complete Best have been sold in Japan. It debuted at number 3 on the Oricon Albums Chart with 34,223 copies sold. Complete Best is Dion's second best position on this chart, after All the Way… A Decade of Song. The album reached also number 1 on the Oricon Daily Chart. However, it went down to number 6 on the weekly chart in its second week, selling 27,281 copies. The following week, right after the Japanese leg of the Taking Chances Tour, Complete Best jumped from number 6 to number 4 with 34,724 sold. Because of third week sales in Japan, Complete Best entered the United World Chart at number 32. The album topped also the Oricon International Albums Chart for 6 consecutive weeks.

Are G4 pop, are they opera or are they indeterminately heterogeneous enough to be identified as a new species called popera? Runners-up in the compellingly addictive television talent show X-Factor, this young and classically-trained male vocal quartet were arguably the only act distinctive enough to fulfil the incomparability criterion alluded to in the contest's title. When it came to the judges' evaluation, even the normally forthright and disputatious Simon Cowell found himself floundering between dumbstruck reticence and fence-straddling equivocation. What is clear, however, from G4's debut album is the populist supermarket direction they've been prodded in. In mitigation, perhaps this is understandable. Despite the bravery and accomplishment of applying operatic blossom to REM's "Everybody Hurts" and Radiohead's "Creep"- and let's hear some more of this emotive excellence, please--Trevor Horns' fail-safe production and the steadfastly predictable musical arrangements on the pop numbers enforces the sort of backdrop karaoke conservatism which distracts from G4's more interesting vocal work, which, after all, is this ensemble's very raison d'etre. So, there's no sign of G4's daft rendition of Britney's "Baby One More Time" but "Bohemian Rhapsody" is present in all its pleasantly pompous glory (a whole orchestra stands in for the Brian May guitar solo) while a hearty "Jerusalem" is likely to out belt the Welsh in any international rugger match singing showdown. And for tearful followers of the round ball game? "Nessum Dorma" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". --Kevin Maidment

"It's true that, because of my age, I don't have the life experience to sing about things like love and death," admits 15-year-old Charlotte Church in the press biography accompanying review copies of her fourth album, Enchantment. "But, as I get older, I find I can be a bit more of a narrator, telling the story and conveying the emotion of a song." Church is referring specifically to her transition to being more of a pop singer and less of a classical one on Enchantment, her first album to be released by the Columbia Records imprint of Sony Music rather than through Sony Classical. There are still some classical selections, notably a version of "Habañera" from Bizet's Carmen, but there are also plenty of show tunes, and, as Church acknowledges, such material often requires more of an emotional involvement, one she is not capable of conveying. Juliet, the Shakespearean character who formed the basis of Maria in the musical West Side Story, was only 14, but the emotions expressed in "Tonight" and "Somewhere," both included here, are very much about love and death, and they call for more than narration. And that's just as true of the Celtic traditional song "Carrickfergus," which laments a lover's inability to be united with her true love (oddly enough, the same subject as the traditional song "The Water Is Wide," which is also here). Lovely as her tone may be, Church simply doesn't sound very upset at the separation, and she sings the words "true love" without any emotional force. She is better at material concerning children and parents, "Papa Can You Hear Me?" from the movie Yentl and "A Bit of Earth" from the musical A Secret Garden. Maybe, then, better choices, along with increasing age, will solve her current problems of interpretation."

Artist: Celine Dion
Label: Sony BMG
Release Date: 2008-10-28 (in North America)
Language: English
Album Review:
Following the first Celine Dion collection, 《All the Way: A Decade of Song》, by roughly a decade, 《My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection》 doubles almost everything about the initial collection: it covers two decades instead of one, has two discs, not one, and falls just short of having the double the songs.
It's almost an overcompensation for how All the Way concentrated on newer recordings at the expense of hits, but then again Celine has had more hits in the ten years since All the Way, so it makes sense that 《My Love》 is a bigger, grander collection.
The problem is, apart from her cover of Roy Orbison's "I Drove All Night," almost none of her new-millennium hits are as memorable as her singles from the '90s, so this double CD doesn't offer too much of an enticement for fans to replace 1999's single-disc set.
But for those listeners who are looking for an overview of Celine Dion's two decades as aninternationalsuperstar, 《My Love》 fits the bill well as it has all her big adult contemporary hits -- "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," "Beauty and the Beast," "If You Asked Me To," "Because You Loved Me," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," and "My Heart Will Go On" -- all sequenced chronologically.

Artist: Dido
Album: Safe Trip Home
Release Date: 17-Nov-2008
Quality: Real 320 kbps! (CD ripped)
Review:
It's five years since "Life for Rent", Dido's nine-million selling follow-up to 2001's 12-million selling debut "No Angel", so you might wonder what's been taking so long. The answer, judging by her third studio album "Safe Trip Home", is that Dido has been taking some time to mature, both musically and emotionally. Where "Life For Rent" was a series of snapshots from the life of a newly single girl (one reviewer called it the musical equivalent of Bridget Jones's Diary), Safe Trip Home is overwhelmingly coloured by the death at the end of 2006 of her father.
Not that it's a gloomy album, but these songs are noticeably more reflective, their themes of longing and absence rooted deeper than the caprices of romantic love, and consequently it feels more serious than her previous work. The outstanding song of the album is the piercingly beautiful, Celtic-flavoured "Grafton Street", a six-minute hymn to loss co-written with Brian Eno and featuring Mick Fleetwood on drums. Listen to it once and it will catch at your heart as a wrenching lament for a lover who will not return. Listen to it again knowing it's an account of visiting her father during his last illness and death ('My love, I know you're leaving, but I will stay here with you') and I guarantee you will be bawling your eyes out uncontrollably long after the album has finished. There's an honesty and depth to this song that you can't fake, even if you tend to the opinion that Dido's distinctive cracked falsetto generally has a limited emotional range.
But that light, husky sweetness lends itself well to intelligent mainstream pop, and this album has benefitted from time spent in LA at the studio of Jon Brion (producer of Fiona Apple, Kanye West and Rufus Wainwright), who co-produced the album alongside Dido and her brother and long-time collaborator Rollo Armstrong. Brion is also responsible for a number of the sumptuous string arrangements that swell the sound to rather grandiose levels on songs such as "Let's Do the Things We Normally Do" and the first single, "Don't Believe in Love", but Dido's own musical contribution is formidable: she plays keyboards, drums and/or guitar on most of the tracks. The lilting recorder solo that carries "Grafton Street" to its haunting conclusion is apparently played on the same instrument she played as a student at the Guildhall School of Music.
The other notable contribution is from Citizen Cope, a Brooklyn-based guitarist, DJ and keyboard player, who duets on the laid-back "Burnin Love", the grit of his voice providing a welcome contrast with hers. The nine-minute closer, "Northern Skies", co-written with Rollo, is the nearest Dido has ever come to poetry, experimenting with little Irish vocal quavers and an expansive musical landscape that makes the more traditional pop tracks such as "Don't Believe in Love" sound unimaginative by comparison. "Don't say how proud you are", she pleads in "Let's Do the Things We Normally Do", another song that addresses an inevitable last goodbye. But this album is a mature and thoughtful collection of songs and a fine memorial to her father, who would have been right to be proud.

The album opens up with “Lay Me Down,” reminiscent of an old spiritual that easily sounds like it could belong on the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? The haunting melody instantly captures you in a sway to hum along. As the songs progress, you find yourself engrossed in the depth of the songwriting prowess of a woman who introspectively births art out of life, love and relationships. You can easily see why this year’s Dove Award winner for “Songwriter of the Year” was the right choice.
In “I Wish,” Morgan enables you to pull out your laundry list of desires to better not only yourself, but everyone around you. In response to these illustrations, this offering is an honest summation of her heart. Morgan neatly draws on all stages of life throughout this record. No matter where you find yourself, she has a way of encouraging vulnerability and openness to speak to the joys and hurts, the victories and disappointments. Her bravery to face the tough parts of life in her songwriting is admirable.
The title track opens the door for the rawness of emotion that accompanies the release of expectations on your own identity. With its well-designed tempo to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, “The Sun Shines Through” uplifts in the most bewildering and undeserved circumstances.
As the record nears its end, “Most of All” is a moving prayer that reminds listeners to not let those most meaningful moments pass us by. In keeping with her roots from her rural upbringing, you’ll hear many different sounds from Appalachia folk and country to piano-driven pop. Beautifully fashioned together, this record is an accurate reflection of its creator. Listen to this record on purpose and with the intent of walking away like you just sat on the porch and had a deep conversation with Cindy about life, love and how God is utterly interwoven into the fabric of every piece. –Amy Fogleman

The bubble had burst and their adoring public had moved on to other stars. G4 -- with four classically trained singers (Jonathan Ansell, Matthew Stiff, Mike Christie, and Ben Thapa) and a near win on the 2004 season of The X Factor -- had opened their account with a number one album in March 2005, featuring classic songs ranging from "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Life on Mars," and "You'll Never Walk Alone" to "Nessun Dorma" and "Jerusalem." They returned less than nine months later with G4 and Friends, a second album including similar classics such as "Barcelona," "Miss You Nights," "La Donne e Mobile," and "I Vow to Thee My Country" -- and that album also hit the Top Ten. But as most reality TV stars had found, if you leave the public eye for too long, another set of similar artists will come along with a new series and you're yesterday's news, however good or talented you might be. Act Three was released for Christmas 2006 and couldn't even get into the Top 20 -- not that it was a worse album than the first two. At the right time, this would have been the chart-topper, with choral versions of yet more hit songs from the world of MOR and easy listening ("Volare," "Cavatina," and "Amazing Grace"), classical ("O Sole Mio" and "Toreador"), nostalgia ("We'll Meet Again," "Danny Boy," and "Silent Night"), and cutting-edge pop (the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays"; yet another Freddie Mercury classic, "Somebody to Love"; Gnarls Barcley's "Crazy"; and an Alan Parsons Project ballad from their Eye in the Sky album, "Old and Wise" [and how many G4 fans would have known that]). Perhaps it was the reality TV syndrome, which seemed to follow the law of diminishing returns pretty quickly, or perhaps too much competition from the similar group Il Divo, who also released their third album, Siempre, in the same week. Or just maybe it was that G4, talented and nice singers though they undoubtedly were, chose the wrong songs at the wrong time and delivered them with a lack of feeling, a lack of soul, and a lack of emotion. The game was up, and soon after this album had left the charts (after only four weeks), they announced they would be splitting up and it would be their last. Bring on the next reality TV group.

With slick production, commercially minded songcraft, and a tabloid-grabbing bassist, Chicago's Fall Out Boy rose to the forefront of emo-pop in the mid-2000s. The band's four members first came together in suburban Wilmette, a bedroom community just 14 miles north of the Windy City, around 2001. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman had all been in and out of various units connected to Chicago's underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the furiously political metalcore outfit whose brief output was both a rallying point and sticking point within the hardcore community. As Fall Out Boy, the quartet used the unbridled intensity of hardcore as a foundation for melody-drenched pop-punk with a heavy debt to the emo scene. They debuted with a self-released demo in 2001, following it up in May 2002 with a split LP on Uprising that also featured Project Rocket (for which Hurley also drummed). The band returned on the label in January with the mini-LP Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girl, but by this point a bidding war of sorts was already in full swing.
Fall Out Boy eventually signed a deal with Gainesville, FL's Fueled by Ramen, the label co-owned by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello, but also received an advance from Island Records to record their proper debut. The advance came with a right of first refusal for Island on Fall Out Boy's next album, but it also financed the recording of Take This to Your Grave, which occurred at Butch Vig's Smart Studios compound in Madison, WI, with Sean O'Keefe (Lucky Boys Confusion, Motion City Soundtrack) at the helm. Take This to Your Grave appeared in May 2003, and Fall Out Boy garnered positive reviews for their gigs at South by Southwest and numerous tour appearances. Their breakout album, the ambitious From Under the Cork Tree, followed in spring 2005, quickly reaching the Top Ten of Billboard's album chart and spawning two Top Ten hits with "Sugar We're Going Down" and the furiously upbeat "Dance, Dance." The album went double platinum, and earned the guys a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.
Fall Out Boy's star status in the underground -- driven by the especially extroverted Wentz, who also gained exposure with his clothing line and Decaydance imprint (of Fueled by Ramen) -- had boiled over into the mainstream. They toured extensively behind the album, both at home and abroad, including spring 2006 arena dates, in addition to appearing on TRL, late-night television, and music award shows. Without taking a break, the guys eventually hunkered down to work on their follow-up record with From Under the Cork Tree producer Neil Avron and, somewhat surprisingly, Babyface. Infinity on High, whose title was taken from a line in one of Van Gogh's personal letters, appeared in early February 2007, spearheaded by the hit single "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race." The album continued Fall Out Boy's streak, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts and going platinum about a month later. Released one year later, the CD/DVD package Live in Phoenix documented the band's strength as a flashy live act.![]()
