Cara Dillon has one of those magical voices -- magical in the way that Niamh Parsons' or Mary Black's is magical, though without sounding very much like either one of them. It's soft without being breathy, and clear without being hard, and absolutely lovely. Her repertoire is similarly hard to define; obviously reared on traditional Irish song, she has spent much of her career so far working in more of a folk-pop mode (notably as Kate Rusby's replacement in the successful band Equation), but both aspects of her musical background are fully in evidence on her American debut album. She recorded it in collaboration with Sam Lakeman, her former bandmate in Equation, and it features a nice mix of modern and traditional fare with something of an emphasis on the latter. The album's first single, "Never in a Million Years," could have been an Equation song, whereas Dillon's quietly spectacular take on the Dougie MacLean composition "Garden Valley" takes more of a trad approach to a modern song. There are a few minor missteps: the slide guitar on "Grace" doesn't work as well as it should, and the rhythm is a bit heavy-handed on "Bold Jamie." But the cameo appearance by Paul Brady (on "Streets of Derry") makes up for a lot, and her gorgeous arrangement of "Brockagh Braes" is alone almost worth the price of the disc. Highly recommended.

In the accompanying photography to her second album, Cara Dillon looks anywhere but directly at the camera. She dwells on the daisies spreading before her, or gazes out of frame toward an unseen vanishing point. The art direction suggests Dillon might be a bit uncomfortable with the hubbub her debut brought, and her sudden role as the beguiling young savior of contemporary Irish folk music. Sweet Liberty retains the structure of that album, mixing traditional with original material. But as effortlessly beautiful as Dillon's voice is throughout, the album's emotional center is brittle. "Right well do I remember now/Those happy childhood days," she sings over swells of harmonium and keyboard. "No other joys I know/For my heart remains on the verdant plains/Near the winding river Roe" — the traditional's words have a new gravity in the context of Dillon's career. The same holds true for the longing soldier's lament "Bonny Bonny," reborn here in a lush arrangement of Uillean pipes and martial drums. Appropriately, Dillon and partner Sam Lakeman recorded Sweet Liberty at home. Those comfortable environs appear in the shadows of "Erin the Green," dedicated to "Mammy and Daddy" and warmed by piano and melodica; the original "High Tide" — while it somehow recalls Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" — is also glanced with the bright song of a flute, even if it ultimately seems forlorn. "Everywhere" avoids that emotion, since it's a pretty little aside seemingly destined for single status. And yet, Sweet Liberty has also received notice for Dillon's affecting version of "There Were Roses," Tommy Sands' powerful tale of the Troubles, religion, and bitter resignation. This is the emotional seesaw of Sweet Liberty. Its arrangements are so graceful, and Dillon's voice is like woven silk. But there is an overriding sense of sighing defense, that she's performing the music this way to reclaim it, to return it to a personal level, and the places — kitchen tables, quiet hillsides, empty pubs, and reflective memory — where the music has always been most powerful.

Although this is her debut offering, Cara Dillon sings with a confidence yet fragility way beyond her years. From the Irish traditional lilt on Donald of Glencoe to the gentleness of Craigie Hill, the singer has a very distinct delivery that is greatly enhanced by a sparse arrangement that has an almost ethereal result. There is also an earthy quality to her voice, which is indicative of her traditional Celtic roots. The Lonesome Scenes of Winter is perhaps the highlight of the record, with a simple lullably-like melody about love and foreseeable marriage. Although there are certain areas which are slightly overproduced, the general feeling of purity isn't lost from start to finish. What is very attractive though about the album is how the songs have a lot of empty space within, allowing various instrumentation to come to the fore. The closing and longest track, I Am A Youth That's Inclined To Ramble, is very poignant and bittersweet. If there is a negative or possible hint of filler material, it would be She's Like The Swallow, which seems out of place in the album's tracklisting and much too modern in light of the other songs. Regardless though, the album is hopefully a sign of things to come from a true gem.

Lara Fabian's 1997 album Pure, was a two million-selling album ,which reached Diamond status in France, from which came the anti-homophobia anthem "La Différence." The album went platinum in less than two weeks. Lara again was bestowed with awards, being awarded a Félix for Popular Album Of The Year at the 1997 ADISQ gala and was also nominated for two Juno awards in the Best Female Singer and Best Selling French Album categories.

Need more evidence of the record industry's obsession with youth? Consider that budding Welsh diva Charlotte Church was a ripe, old 16 when this, her first greatest-hits anthology was released. Spanning her first four releases, as well as some outside collaborations and unreleased material, this 18-track collection underscores the soprano's seemingly boundless potential--as well as some potential career obstacles ahead. Her crystalline, still-maturing voice is best showcased on classically oriented works like Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," and her now-ubiquitous rendering of Delibes' "Flower Duet." She also excels on folk traditionals such as "She Moved Through the Fair" and "My Langan Love." But overwrought productions like the already-dated "Dream a Dream" and "Habanera," a faux-flamenco take on Bizet, nearly get the best of her. Still, her promising duet with fellow young phenom Josh Groban on "The Prayer" and her mature, dreamy reading of A Beautiful Mind's "All Love Can Be," as well as strong performances on the previously unreleased "It's the Heart That Matters Most" and "Bridge over Troubled Waters," are ample evidence of her potential for rewarding pop crossover--if she doesn't retire by 21. --Jerry McCulley

Making A Dream Come True must certainly have been just that for 12-year-old Becky Taylor, balancing singing with a symphony orchestra one day with being back at school the next. Having appeared in Les Misérables at age 7, she won the Thorndyke Theatre Talent Competition at 8 and the British Arts Award two years later. Inevitably dubbed the "new Charlotte Church," Taylor nevertheless avoids hymns and classical arrangements, offering an appropriately youthful selection from movies and musicals. Several of these, including the specially written "Song of Dreams," continue the theme of dreaming or have fantastical, magical connotations. With a Hollywood-style production and numbers from Peter Pan ("Just Beyond the Stars" and "I'm Flying"), Mary Poppins ("Stay Awake"), and The Rescuers ("Someone's Waiting for You"), there is a Disney-sweet sensibility throughout. Taylor makes a fine job of "Over the Rainbow," being a much more appropriate age for Dorothy than Judy Garland was. Moreover, she is surprisingly comfortable with "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady, though anyone would struggle to make much of "Thank You, Stars" from Watership Down. Demonstrating a voice years ahead of its time, this cute and innocent album promises much for Becky Taylor's future as a major stage-musical star. --Gary S Dalkin

During the early 21st century, it certainly appeared as though quite a few notable artists broke through with a sound that contained traditional Celtic sounds - especially the Irish Tenors, and of course, you'd have to include Riverdance. And the next in line appears to be Anuna -- a multi member Irish choral group, which has been issuing albums on a regular basis since the early '90s. Having already built a sizeable following in their homeland and performed alongside such admirers as Sting, Barry Manilow, Elvis Costello, the Chieftains, and Sinead O'Connor, the group issued Celtic Origins in 2007. An amalgam of both pop and classical music, the album is full of gentle melodies and soothing harmonies, as evidenced by such re-worked traditional tunes as "Siúil a Rúin" and "Pie Jesu". Additionally, there are also other tunes that mix traditional text with original music penned by band leader/founder Michael McGlynn -- including such standouts as "Santus", and the vocal-only showcase, "Dúlamán". Released in conjunction with Celtic Origins is a companion DVD of live performances, which was aired extensively on PBS. Rich in vocal talent and tradition, Celtic Origins has poised Anuna for their stateside breakthrough.

Ronan Hardiman first gained renown as the composer for Michael Flatley's Irish dance extravaganzas, Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames. On Anthem, his second solo release, he moves away from the relentlessly rhythmic music of his Flatley collaborations, in favor of a looser, more atmospheric style of composing and performing. Hardiman's sweeping synthesizer tones on tracks such as "Ready for Life" recall the ethereal music of Enya while his use of Latin chants on "Salve" sound like a less spooky version of Enigma. Hardiman has a gift for writing great hooks, which give songs like "That Place in Your Heart" and "Heaven (Waiting for Me There)" an unexpected, but enjoyable pop sheen. Internationally lauded contemporary Celtic vocal ensemble Anuna, best known stateside as the original Riverdance choir, lend their ghostly voices to the holiday genre with the Christmas-themed Winter Songs. The choir, led by sibling directors Michael and John McGlynn, downplay the "sing-songy" aspects of classic carols like "Away in a Manger" and "Silent Night," filling them instead with complex harmonies that recall Bacharach and the Beach Boys. That's not to say that they ignore the season's emotional weight -- ancient Irish hymns like the gorgeous "Codhlaim Go Suan" are steeped in modal simplicity -- but there is a definite 1960s Robert Shaw Chorale feel to the more recognizable selections that gives Winter Songs an easy listening, new age feel without the keyboards softness. Fans of Enya, Loreena McKennitt and most notably Clannad, the act in which Anuna seems most reverent to, will find this unique collection a soothing addition to a night of quiet, fire-lit reverie.
