Susan Wong Discography

|

She was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Sydney, Australia with her family at the age of seven. Musically inclined from a young age, she learned to play the piano at age five and later she also learned the violin. At school in Sydney, she sang alto in the choir and appeared in the school dramas (Gilbert & Sullivan & the like) and entered a number of piano competitions. She received an associate degree, ATCL, in piano at Trinity College.

Her first break in the music world was at the age of sixteen when her parents entered her for a singing contest in Sydney. It was organized by TVB with the winner to be offered a recording contract with one of the big music companies in Hong Kong. She won the competition and was sent back to Hong Kong and met with the TVB producers who wanted her to sign with one of the music labels. After much deliberation she finally decided that it wasn’t right for her at that time and instead returned to Australia to study at University. She pretty much just settled back into life at University and put aside any dreams of a music career.

After graduating from university, she returned to Hong Kong in 1997 to help run her family’s accounting business and gained CPA certification. One of her students who she was teaching piano was working for a Hong Kong independent label, and she asked the boss if they wanted a singer. Susan started recording her favourite English songs and made the album ‘Close To You’. When the album came out it in 2002, it was widely acclaimed and quickly became a favourite of music stores to play and the album was soon climbing up the sales charts in countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. The four album releases since‘Close To You’ have also enjoyed wide critical and commercial success establishing Susan as probably the No.1 selling English language female singer of her genre throughout South East Asia.

In early 2007, Susan Wong signed a new recording agreement with Hong Kong based Evolution Limited and released her first album under Evolution in August 2007.

Michael Learns to Rock Collection (10 Albums)

Biography by John Bush @ allmusic.com
Michael Learns to Rock is one of the most popular Danish bands, in their homeland as well as the ever-eclectic Asian rim. The group was formed around a tiny bar band fronted by vocalist Jascha Richter and his sister, plus guitarist Mikkel Lentz and drummer Kare Wanscher. By 1988, Richter's sister had left and bassist Soren Madsen completed the lineup. Michael Learns to Rock released their self-titled debut album in 1991, and earned a release in America through Impact Records. Cleveland Int'l provided distribution for 1993's Colours, 1995's Played on Pepper, and 2002's Blue Night. Though the band remained unknown in the Western Hemisphere, Asian audiences continued to make them one of the most popular artists in the region.

Bon Jovi Complete Discography

|

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Few bands embodied the era of pop-metal like Bon Jovi. By merging Def Leppard's loud but tuneful metal with Bruce Springsteen's working-class sensibilities, the New Jersey-based quintet developed an ingratiatingly melodic and professional variation of hard rock -- one that appealed as much to teenagers as to housewives. Bon Jovi skillfully employed professional songwriters to give their songs, especially their power ballads, an appropriately commercial sheen, inaugurating a trend that dominated mainstream hard rock and metal for the next decade. They also made simple performance videos that emphasized lead singer Jon Bon Jovi's photogenic good looks, and these clips helped propel 1986's Slippery When Wet and 1988's New Jersey into multi-platinum status around the world. Both records were criticized for being more pop than metal, as well as being targeted toward teenyboppers, yet the group managed to subtly change its image in the early '90s, moving away from metal and concentrating on straightforward arena rock and big ballads. The shift in style worked, and Bon Jovi were the only American pop-metal band of the '80s to retain a sizable audience in the '90s.

Jon Bongiovi spent most of his adolescence ditching school to play rock & roll, usually in local bands with his friend David Rashbaum. Bongiovi's cousin Tony owned the famous New York recording studio the Power Station, which was where Jon hung out. He was hired as a janitor, and soon he was recording demos at the Power Station with several famous musicians, including members of the E Street Band and Aldo Nova. One of these demos, "Runaway," became a hit on local New Jersey radio, and Bongiovi formed Bon Jovi to support the song, recruiting not only Rashbaum, but also guitarist Dave Sabo, bassist Alec John Such, and drummer Tico Torres. Soon, Bon Jovi was the subject of a major-label bidding war, and the group -- or, according to some reports, just Bongiovi -- signed to Polygram/Mercury in 1983. Upon signing, Jon changed his last name to Bon Jovi in order to de-emphasize his ethnic background, and Rashbaum adopted his middle name, Bryan, as his last name. Before the group entered the studio, Bon Jovi replaced Sabo with Richie Sambora.
Bon Jovi's eponymous debut album was released in 1984, and "Runaway" became a Top 40 hit. Following its success, Tony Bongiovi sued the band, claiming he developed their successful sound; the group settled out of court. The following year, 7800 Fahrenheit was released and went gold. Despite the band's respectable success, Bon Jovi weren't becoming the superstars they had hoped, and they changed their approach for their next album, Slippery When Wet. Hiring professional songwriter Desmond Child as a collaborator, the group wrote 30 songs and auditioned them for local New Jersey and New York teenagers, basing the album's running order on their opinions. After ditching the original cover of a busty woman in a wet T-shirt for the title traced in water on a garbage bag, Slippery When Wet was released in 1986. Supported by several appealing, straightforward videos that showcased the photogenic Jon, the album eventually sold nine million copies in the U.S. alone, helping usher in the era of pop-metal. Two songs, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer," reached number one, while "Wanted Dead or Alive" reached the Top Ten, and Bon Jovi were established as superstars.
Bon Jovi replicated the Slippery When Wet formula for 1988's New Jersey, which shot to number one upon its release. New Jersey was only slightly less successful than its predecessor, selling five million copies and generating two number one singles, "Bad Medicine" and "I'll Be There for You," as well as the Top Ten hits "Born to Be My Baby," "Lay Your Hands on Me," and "Living in Sin." In 1989, the band supported Cher, who was then dating Sambora, on her Heart of Stone album, which was recorded while the group was in the midst of an 18-month international tour. Following the completion of the tour, the band went on hiatus. During their time off, Jon Bon Jovi wrote the soundtrack for Young Guns II, which was released in 1990 as the Blaze of Glory album. The record produced two hit singles in the number one title track and the number 12 "Miracle," as well as earning Grammy and Oscar nominations.
The following year, Bon Jovi reunited to record their fifth album, Keep the Faith, which was released in the fall of 1992. While the album didn't match the blockbuster status of its predecessors, largely because musical tastes had shifted in the four years between New Jersey and Keep the Faith, it was nevertheless a big hit, and its more straightforward, anthemic sound produced the hit single "Bed of Roses." A hits collection, Cross Road, followed in 1994, and in the fall of 1995, they released These Days, which proved to be a bigger success in Europe than America. After appearing in the 1996 film Moonlight and Valentino, Jon Bon Jovi released his first official solo album in the summer of 1997.
Three years later, Bon Jovi regrouped and released Crush. "It's My Life" and "Thank You for Loving Me" were a chart hits, and Bon Jovi's star power soared beyond their wildest dreams. Crush eventually went double platinum in the U.S. and sold eight million copies worldwide, but Bon Jovi stayed focus. Within a year they returned with an eighth studio effort, Bounce, which appeared in fall 2002. Tours across the globe as well as dates with the Goo Goo Dolls fared well. In 2003 Bon Jovi re-recorded many of their most well-known songs for the release This Left Feels Right and followed it in 2004 with a DVD companion of the same title. The ambitious 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong four-CD/one-DVD box set of rarities arrived later that November, followed by the all-new Have a Nice Day and a greatest-hits anthology called Cross Road in 2005. The band spent the following year in the studio, putting the finishing touches on a collection of pop-infused heartland country anthems. The resulting Lost Highway, which featured duets with LeAnn Rimes and Big & Rich, arrived in the summer of 2007 and grabbed the band a healthy, new country music fan base in the process. Lost Highway's cross-genre formula proved to be quite potent indeed, securing the band its third number one album in the U.S., as well as topping the charts in Japan, Australia, Europe, and Canada.

Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009)

|

Review by Heather Phares @ allmusic.com
"I found a new way, baby," Alex Kapranos snarls on "Ulysses," Tonight's lead single and opening track, and he's almost right. Franz Ferdinand took awhile to record this album after releasing You Could Have It So Much Better as quickly as possible after their breakthrough debut, spending a couple of years coming up with the concept of a "dirty pop" album and trying out dance and pop producers like Erol Alkan and Girls Aloud sound-shapers Xenomania before settling on Dan Carey, who has worked with everyone from CSS to Kylie Minogue. The group tried hard to make these songs a deliberate break from their previous music, and the album is nothing if not deliberate: a concept album about a debauched night out and the morning after, Tonight is more focused than You Could Have It So Much Better, and on the surface, it sounds different than what came before. The band's normally de rigueur angular post-punk guitars are dialed down in favor of beats, bass, and lots of keyboards, all of which are on display on "Ulysses," which, like You Could Have It So Much Better's "Do You Want To?," initially sounds like an odd single choice, then makes perfect sense after a few listens. Kapranos whispers like a devil on your shoulder as the band takes its time building to disco-punk euphoria.

Throughout the rest of album, however, Franz Ferdinand alternates between putting their rave-ups in slightly different skins and taking some real chances with their music. With the most familiar-sounding songs at the top, Tonight's song sequencing might be the most pop thing about it: "Turn It On"'s stop-start rhythms,"Send Him Away"'s Afro-pop-tinged guitars, and "Can't Stop Feeling"'s DFA-like percussion and fuzzy synths are minor refinements on the sound the band has used since Franz Ferdinand. A few songs transcend templates, like the unrepentantly rakish swagger of "No You Girls," which boasts saucy lyrics like "kiss me where your eye won't meet me" and a cleverly twisting chorus that expresses the album's theme of smart enough to know better hedonism perfectly. "Live Alone"'s disco-fied push-pull between solitude and intimacy makes ambivalence exciting, and "Bite Hard"'s punchy drums are the sound of dancing on your conscience's grave. The band saves Tonight's most interesting songs for last: "Lucid Dreams" is oddly dark and jubilant, setting its fantasies to one of the album's boldest arrangements -- whether or not the way it trails off on a four-minute jam is successful is a matter of taste, but it's a welcome risk on an album that often feels safe despite its attempts to shake things up. Likewise, the way the acoustic closer "Katherine Kiss Me" transforms "No You Girls"' raw nighttime demands into wry daytime flirtation is so clever that it makes the rest of Tonight all the more puzzling -- it's often catchy and kinetic in the moment, yet it still feels like Franz Ferdinand has the potential to do more with their music than just slightly tweak and polish a sound they established several albums ago.

Keyshia Cole - A Different Me (2008)

|

Review by Andy Kellman @ allmusic.com
A Different Me offers more dimensions, from lyrical and production standpoints, than Keyshia Cole's first two albums. Everything she recorded prior to this came from some degree of pain. Even though Just Like You's "Heaven Sent" was as beatific as anything else on the charts throughout 2008, its sentiment came more from a sense of relief in the wake of relationships gone sour, and "Let It Go" was made for the club but dealt with "roaming dogs." Overall, this is Cole's most free-spirited and adventurous album to date, and it is not without its stretches where reach exceeds grasp, like the jazzed-up, over-busy statement of purpose "Make Me Over" and the surprisingly saccharine "This Is Us." Yet there's a core of at least seven songs here that rate as highly as the best from the first two albums, and they're anything but reheated. "Don't Stop" beams with energy and pure, uncomplicated joy. "Oh-Oh, Yeah-Yea" is yearningly seductive, from Cole's pleas to its drawn-out tides of strings. In "Thought You Should Know," she doesn't drop her guard entirely while revealing more vulnerability than ever. "No Other" is the only track that sounds cut from the same cloth as Just Like You, and the resemblance is only in sound, with the equally urgent and sweepingly dramatic "Shoulda Let You Go" a definite reference, but the emotions between the two are starkly contrasting, with regret exchanged for aching desire. Cole pushes herself into new territory and becomes a more versatile songwriter and vocalist in convincing, frequently thrilling, fashion. Here's where the comparisons begin to fade away.

Erin Mccarley - Love Save The Empty (2009)

|

Review by William Ruhlmann @ allmusic.com
By rights, Erin McCarley's debut album Love, Save the Empty should be co-credited to her musical partner Jamie Kenney, who co-wrote nine of the 11 songs, arranged the music, orchestrated the strings, produced the album, played guitar and keyboards, and sang backup vocals. Kenney's contribution is crucial from the first note, as he creates lush, sophisticated pop/rock settings for McCarley, who sings in a throaty contralto that has a timbre similar to Björk's, albeit without the Icelandic accent and with better breath control. It is that combination of voice and arrangements that enabled Universal Republic Records to achieve placements for songs on numerous television shows -- Grey's Anatomy, Ghost Whisperer, Privileged, One Tree Hill -- in addition to a commercial for Rhapsody prior to the album's release, with the use of the title track in the romantic comedy film He's Just Not That into You a month after release. Such exposure is the early 21st century equivalent to getting extensive radio ads back in the 20th century, of course, and it is indicative of the intended audience for Love, Save the Empty: teenage and young adult women likely to respond to the catchy music and to McCarley's repetitious lyrics. Those words read like something scrawled in a dreamy high school student's composition book, a confused combination of clichés, declarations of self-empowerment, and romantic turmoil. That makes them appropriate accompaniment to the story lines on those TV shows, of course, and it may help McCarley sell some records, even if, oddly enough, she herself seems the least impressive aspect of her album and its aggressive promotional campaign.

Ben Kweller - Changing Horses (2009)

|

Changing Horses is the fourth studio album by Ben Kweller, which was expected for release in September 2008 but is now to be released on February 2, 2009 in Europe and February 3, 2009 in the United States. Kweller has described the new album as being more Country in style than his previous releases. The album features his rhythm section Chris Morrissey (bass) and Mark Stepro (drums). It also debuts the talents of Kitt Kitterman who plays pedal steel guitar and Dobro.

It figures that Ben Kweller, a Texas-bred rock prodigy devoted to tunecraft and lyrical wit, would eventually turn to country, which prizes both. But his new sound, per his new home, is more Austin eclectic than Nashville mainstream; see "Sawdust Man," a roadhouse blues with a chorus ("I'm on top of the Greyhound station/Won't you pleeeeeease come home") that sounds like Harry Nilsson and John Lennon on a bender circa Pussy Cats. There's a charmingly tossed-off quality to the entire set, whose 10 songs frequently deal with women and their troubled men. The best is "On Her Own," a number in praise of female self-determination with a precise, pedal-steel-driven chorus that would fit nicely on a Faith Hill or Brad Paisley album.

Marc Anthony - Mended (2002)

|

Review by Jose F. Promis @ allmusic.com
After several release date shuffles, Marc Anthony issued his sophomore English-language set, Mended, in 2002, shortly after issuing Libre, another excellent Spanish-language salsa album. (Note that both album covers are from the same photo shoot.) Mended delivers more of Anthony's passionate, urgent songs of love and betrayal, destined for mass consumption, which is what his English-speaking fans have been clamoring for. Shining moments include the fiery and exotic single "I've Got You," which also closes off the album as the Spanish-language track "Te Tengo Aquí," the sexy, mid-tempo "Love Won't Get Any Better," and the album's true highlight, the gutsy, electric, and relentless "Tragedy." That song, incidentally, was slated to be the album's first single, and had begun receiving radio play in the U.S., but was pulled after the events of September 11th. Despite these surefire hits, the album is weighted down by quite a bit of unremarkable material, including "I Reach for You" and "Give Me a Reason," the latter of which seems borderline listless. And the ballads -- oh, the melodrama! None of the many ballads come close to the soaring heights of "You Sang to Me," the closest of which, "I Wanna Be Free," still doesn't match the beauty of that earlier hit. The lyrics are gooey, and the songs seem quite middle of the road, although "Everything You Do," which could have easily come off as pure schlock, winds up being quite likable. So, despite some remarkable moments and Anthony's always excellent singing, the almost too exquisitely produced Mended seems somewhat anticlimactic, which is a shame, considering the breadth of Marc Anthony's undeniable talent.

Marc Anthony - Grandes Exitos (2000)

|

From Amazon.com
Sigo Siendo Yo (Still Being Me) is not only the title of Marc Anthony's new hits collection, it's also a reaffirmation of his status as one of Spanish-language music's preeminent voices. The stirring set is balanced with sweeping ballads ("Ahora Quien," "Se Esfuma Tu Amor") and Anthony's true forte--scorching salsa numbers ("Valio La Pena," Tu Amor Me Hace Bien"). Still, everything is vividly enhanced by Anthony's astonshing vocal range. The disc's two new songs are a toss up: "Lo Que No Di" is overblown, overwrought and ponderous. In other words, a likely theme song for some future telenovela. First single "Que Precio Tiene El Cielo" is much better, highlighted by a sweet, slowly building salsa rhythm. Some hits--"Dimelo," "Muy Dentro De Mi"--are equally familiar in their English-language versions but benefit from richer performances en espanol--usually the case with Anthony's material. Also included--perhaps as a sweet bit of foresight--is "No Me Ames," Anthony's 1999 duet with future wife Jennifer Lopez. --Joey Guerra

Marc Anthony - Marc Anthony (1999)

|

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine @ allmusic.com
Marc Anthony was a salsa superstar throughout the '90s, long before the Latin pop explosion of the 1999. Once Ricky Martin ushered in a new era of crossovers that spring with "Livin' La Vida Loca," there was a rush of crossover acts, almost enough to make it seem like Anthony was left behind. After all, his bid for mainstream success as the starring role in Paul Simon's Broadway musical The Capeman was undone as it became one of the Great White Way's most notorious failures. Still, Anthony had his own English-language album in the works. Titled Marc Anthony, the record appeared in the fall of 1999, guaranteeing it a shot at a mass audience, which is exactly what it was designed to do. As a matter of fact, it's almost a bit too calculated, opening with two interchangeable ballads that set the tone for a pleasant, subdued set of Latin-tinged adult contemporary pop. Anthony sings beautifully throughout, but he's never given the opportunity to be truly electric, the way he can be with hot salsa numbers. The liveliest the album gets is the catchy, mid-tempo single "I Need to Know," which is gently danceable, or the mild salsa of "That's Okay," and the Latin dance-pop of "She's Been Good to Me." The rest is almost all pop ballads, perfectly produced and gamely sung by Anthony. Some of these work very well, others simply fade into the slipstream. That's particularly frustrating because Anthony is such a talented singer that it's evident that he's capable of much more than this. Marc Anthony isn't bad for what it is, and a few of its singles are quite good, but it's not at the level of his earlier records, or Martin's crossover bid of 1999, either.

Marc Anthony - Contra la Corriente (1997)

|

Review by Terry Jenkins @ allmusic.com
While it doesn't quite match the dizzying heights of his breakthrough Todo a Su Tiempo, Marc Anthony's third album Contra la Corriente is nevertheless a barnstormer of a record. Anthony is no typical salsa singer -- he's a powerful, bold singer who doesn't follow the genre's traditions. He ignores improvisation and concentrates on love songs, but the very sensuality of his vocals and music is his trademark. There might not be as many great songs here as on Todo a Su Tiempo, but there are no bad tunes, and Contra la Corriente on the whole captures his soaring, sexy vocals in a near-flawless manner.

Track List
1. Y Hubo Alguien
2. Contra la Corriente
3. Si Te Vas - Marc Anthony, Fernandez, Pedro
4. Me Voy a Regalar
5. No Me Conoces - Marc Anthony, Arias, Fernando

Marc Anthony - Todo a Su Tiempo (1995)

|

Review by Evan C. Gutierrez @ allmusic.com
Though Marc Anthony was by many standards an established presence in the field before the 1995 release of Todo a Su Tiempo, it was this record that announced his reign as the crown prince of salsa. Previous projects had shown promise and abundant talent, but never before the level of polish, taste, and confidence present here. His second album with producer Sergio George was certainly a step forward from their 1993 release of Otra Nota. Two years seem to have cleansed this creative duo of its desire for the emotive pop schmaltz that plagued its previous record. Free from these self-destructive longings, George and Anthony set to crafting a crystalline, shimmering, and yet warm contemporary salsa sound that would set the bar for the decade. With musicians like bass player Ruben Rodriguez, percussionists Bobby Allende, Marc Quiñones, and Luis Quintero, trumpet player and arranger Angel Fernandez, and several other modern masters, this is one for the books, vocal performance notwithstanding. Anthony's voice is soaring and luminescent, as salsa lovers have now come to expect of him. With an enviable range and perhaps the finest improvisational abilities on the scene today, Marc Anthony has earned his reputation. Todo a Su Tiempo is without question one of the finest salsa records of the '90s.

Track List
1. Se Me Sigue Olvidando - Marc Anthony, Perez, Rudy Amado
2. Te Conozco Bien - Marc Anthony, Alfanno, Omar
3. Hasta Ayer - Marc Anthony, Delgado, Manny
4. Nadie Como Ella - Marc Anthony, Alfanno, Omar
5. Te Amare - Marc Anthony, Ramirez, Angel Jr.
6. Llegaste a Mi - Marc Anthony, Alfanno, Omar
7. Y Sigues Siendo Tu - Marc Anthony, Reyes, Laura
8. Por Amar Se da Todo - Marc Anthony, Salako
9. Vieja Mesa - Marc Anthony, Victor, Victor

Marc Anthony - Otra Nota (1993)

|

Review by Evan C. Gutierrez @ allmusic.com
Otra Nota was the world's introduction to a young salsero who later in his career would be crowned king. Even on his debut performance, Marc Anthony has a developed, unique, and individual voice. Though he is still quite youthful here and the album is smoother around the edges than more recent works, it is evident that Anthony has brought quality and passion to his listeners from the beginning. The memorable melodies and singable coros that made Anthony a household name are present from the very first track, "Palabras de Alma." His edgy improvisation and wide vocal range are showcased well with tunes like "Hasta Que Te Conoci" and "Necesito Amarte." With much more pop influence than future projects, this release contains English-language tunes like "Make It with You." The reverb-saturated and synthesizer-heavy production typical of the time period soaks Anthony's pop-oriented balladry. Thankfully, these elements do not affect the majority of the salsa-driven repertoire. Super-producer Sergio George's mark is unmistakable, having worked with some of the genre's most successful artists. Though the production is quite dated in places, the overall quality of the arrangements is outstanding. Stylistic considerations notwithstanding, Anthony's debut is at the least a strong promise for the future, and arguably as strong as any release to follow.

Track List
1. Palabras del Alma - Marc Anthony, Chester, Ilan
2. Si Tú No Te Fueras - Marc Anthony, Gutierrez, Jaime
3. Hasta Que Te Conoci - Marc Anthony, Gabriel, Juan
4. El Último Beso - Marc Anthony, Muniz, Felipe
5. Make It With You - Marc Anthony, Gates, David [1]
6. Necesito Amarte - Marc Anthony, Castillo, Luis [1]
7. ¿Juego O Amor? - Marc Anthony, George, Sergio
8. Si He de Morir - Marc Anthony, Díaz, Luis

Eleanor McEvoy is an impressive debut album from McEvoy, proving that she is not only capable of fusing contemporary folk and celtic music, but that she's a singer-songwriter with a graceful, individual voice. Both the music and the songs have a quietly powerful beauty, which makes it no wonder that the album helped McEvoy win the Irish Record Industry Award for Best New Artist.

Marc Anthony - Libre (2001)

From Amazon.com
There's a palpable sense of joy in Marc Anthony's voice. The salsa star and pop sensation may be slight in stature, but when he opens his mouth to sing, the sheer power and passion of his tenor grabs a hold of your heart and makes you sit up and pay attention. The king of contemporary salsa was born and raised in New York City, but as good as Anthony is in his native tongue, he is triumphant when he sings in Spanish. Like Youssou N'Dour, Celia Cruz, and other great voices, Anthony's intensity and purpose transcend language barriers: even if you don't understand his words, it's difficult not to feel what he is expressing. On his first salsa collection since 1997's potent Contra la Corriente (and his first CD since his 1999 self-titled, slightly watered-down pop smash) Marc Anthony allows the emotionality of the rhythm to take control. Backed by a topnotch band, Anthony's supple voice carries the beat along, and on tracks like the propulsive "De Que Depende" he soars. His joy and the joy of hearing a great singer are contagious. --Amy Linden

Meiko - Meiko (2008)

Meiko is one of the most promising singer-songwriters to emerge from the Los Angeles music scene in recent years. Counting among her influences artists as diverse as Patty Griffin, Sade, and Portishead, Meiko has managed to create songs of sweet disquiet that are all her own. In early 2007, Meiko performed at the Sundance Film Festival and caught the ear of Paste Magazine editor Josh Jackson, who boldly declared her a “big success story” waiting to happen; predicting it was “only a matter of time” before she found her way onto Nic Harcourt’s influential Morning Becomes Eclectic radio program on KCRW. It was a prognostication that proved especially prophetic, as just a few months later Meiko’s music became a staple of the L.A. radio station’s playlists.

Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989)

|

Amazon.com essential recording
Picking up where the breakthrough funk-pop of Control left off, Janet Jackson and her production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis laced Rhythm Nation with high-minded references to societal ills--seldom the favored province of dance music, but a daring attempt nonetheless. Songs like "State of the World" and "The Knowledge" follow in the tradition of "free your mind and your ass will follow." Still, aside from the title track, it was the pure pop fare and dance music that stormed the charts: "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," and "Come Back to Me" concentrate on the politics of personal relationships, not public policy, while "Black Cat" burns the place down with a fierce burst of hard rock. Rhythm Nation 1814 doesn't necessarily hang together thematically, but it's so chock full of hits, you scarcely notice. --Daniel Durchholz

En Vogue - Masterpiece Theatre (2000)

Review by Stacia Proefrock @ allmusic.com
Whether it was caused by Dawn Robinson's absence or the questionable manipulations of their production team, En Vogue's first release as a trio, EV3, was a disappointment. Masterpiece Theatre, their second album since Robinson's departure, shows the group in much finer form. The silky-smooth harmonies are still there, combined with forceful solos and sassy and intelligent lyrics. "Love U Crazay" and "Those Dogs" both explore the liabilities of love in an aggressively funny way, set to famous classical music melodies, while still keeping funky R&B flavors. More traditional love songs pepper the rest of the album, but throughout, Masterpiece Theatre manages to accomplish what few albums do -- being clever and classy at the same time.

En Vogue - EV3 (1997)

Review by Leo Stanley @ allmusic.com
The sound of En Vogue isn't greatly affected by the departure of Dawn Robinson for their third album, EV3, since the group's harmonies remain remarkably supple and soulful. Instead, the group are hurt by its selection of producers and songwriters. En Vogue have decided to work with Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy only occasionally on EV3, choosing to hire such professional songwriters and producers as Babyface, David Foster, Diane Warren and Ivan Matias, who arranged their hit single "Don't Let Go (Love)." At times, these pairings work: Babyface's "Whatever" is funkier than his previous work, and Matias brings a gospel-drenched sensibility to his songs. In the cases of Warren and Foster, they reshape En Vogue as an adult contemporary band, sapping the group of any of their energy or style. Still, there are enough strong moments scattered throughout the album to make it worth the wait.

En Vogue - Funky Divas (1992)

Review by Jose F. Promis @ allmusic.com
The 1990s was a time when hip-hop infused with R&B became pop music, and at the forefront of this movement was En Vogue. Their most commercially and critically successful album, Funky Divas, stands as one of the best pop/R&B albums to emerge from that time, incorporating soul, hip-hop, pop, dance, and rock to create one of the era's most diverse, dazzling, and exciting pieces of work. The album, which is basically free of filler, scored no less than five hit singles, three of which became Top Ten pop hits. Additionally, several other album tracks became dance hits and received considerable airplay as well. These include the unstoppable "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," which combined perfect harmonies, street sass, and 1990s female assertion to create one of the biggest hits of 1992, as well as a catch phrase which became ubiquitous in popular culture. Other hits include their sophisticated, shimmering Top Ten remake of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel," a ghetto love fable initially popularized by Aretha Franklin, the doo wop good-feelin' "Give It Up Turn It Loose," the jazzy "Love Don't Love You," and the hard rock smash "Free Your Mind." The last was a hit which, following the summer of the Los Angeles riots, struck a chord with national audiences by coaxing people to let down their guards about racism and prejudice. Other highlights include the great opener "This Is Your Life," the hip-hop tracks "Hip Hop Lover" and "It Ain't Over Till the Fat Lady Sings," the house track "What Is Love," the sexy, Middle Eastern-influenced "Desire," and their wonderful, should-have-been-a-hit version of Curtis Mayfield's "Hooked on Your Love." Combining sass, elegance, and class with amazing vocals and perfect production, this delightful set stands as one of the 1990s definitive pop albums.

Track List
01. This Is Your Life
02. My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)
03. Hip Hop Lover
04. Free Your Mind

En Vogue - Born To Sing (1990)

Review by Jose F. Promis @ allmusic.com
The '80s produced countless "three girl and a drum machine"-type acts, but 1990 produced the trendsetting quartet En Vogue (courtesy of producers Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster), who, with their individual vocal skills, sophisticated sense of fashion, sultry videos, and smart singles, went on to become one of the decade's most successful and influential acts. The album that started it all was Born to Sing, which scored two pop hits and two more R&B hits. First and foremost is "Hold On," a cool, shuffling, timeless hip-hop R&B track which peaked at number two on the pop charts and showcased the girls' effortless harmonies. "Lies," which alternated lead vocalists (and featured a rap courtesy of Debbie T.), managed to crack the Top 40 while proving that all members of the quartet were equally adept at handling lead vocals. The biting "You Don't Have to Worry" and the sensual "Don't Go" both scored high on the R&B charts without becoming pop hits. Other highlights include the funky new jill swing track "Strange" and their one-minute version of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (which should have been a full-length recording). There are a couple of duds, including "Part of Me," "Just Can't Stay Away," and the CD bonus track, "Waitin' on You," but overall this album is a winner, and was just a preview of the massive success they would achieve with 1992's Funky Divas.

Amy Macdonald - This Is The Life (2007)

|

Review by Sharon Mawer @ allmusic.com
The debut album from Scottish singer/songwriter Amy MacDonald, This Is the Life achieved a remarkable feat — it entered the charts at number two. MacDonald admits that the song "Poison Prince," which received a limited release as a single, is based on the life of Babyshambles and Libertines singer Pete Doherty but the first nationally released single, "Mr. Rock & Roll," has nothing whatever to do with him. With a finger on the pulse of news items of 2007, she sings on "Footballer's Wife" about WAG (wives and girlfriends) culture, famous for nothing much more than their celebrity partners. The title track, "This Is the Life," reflects the lifestyle she had always wanted to follow since the early days of practicing the guitar and honing her songwriting skills; "Let's Start a Band" is exactly that, a song about being successful in the fickle career of pop music, a theme that is further developed on the song "Barrowland Ballroom," named after a venue in Glasgow that many an aspiring artist wishes to play in. MacDonald captures the feelings of ordinary people in the crowd wishing that something exciting would happen in their lives ("I wish I saw Bowie playing on that stage"). There is a nostalgic feel to the album, conjuring up vocal images of Kirsty MacColl, and even the album cover evokes the album art of the '70s, looking like the corners have worn away with age.

Debbie Gibson - Body Mind Soul (1993)

|

Review by Peter Fawthrop @ allmusic.com
It must be difficult for a teen sensation to bridge herself from her own self-inflicted goody two-shoes labeling to a modern, respectable artist. Debbie Gibson is an artist, having penned nearly all of her songs and produced a good amount as well. Body, Mind, Soul is not the tragedy that Tiffany's New Inside turned out to be, but it surely did not benefit her floundering career. She seeks writing help from Sturken and Rogers, who brought Donny Osmond some of his better late-'80s material. Her collaborations with them (aside from "Love or Money") are gnawing and incessant, and instead of striving for class, she turns in the direction of a female neo-New Kids on the Block. To Gibson's credit, the best songs are those written wholly by her. "Little Birdie" is an indicator of where her career would eventually lead (Broadway) and is light and charming. "When I Say No" is a finely tuned pop surface carrying the message that unwanted sexual persuasion is intolerable. An even bolder message follows on "Kisses for One," which not so subtly speaks against the danger of AIDS. Her lyrics begin with a liberal viewpoint, "living in a world where love is deadly," and end up answering that verse with "chances are the love was not love at all," hinting that the true "cure" is not something that we need a scientist to come up with, it is much simpler: commitment between two people. In yearning for a new direction, it is clear that Debbie has taken a few missteps, mistaking fad for maturity. One of the least accessible tunes from the album was the song chosen as the first single, "Losin Myself," in which she portrays a stripper. "Debbie does R&B" to the tune of a flavorless but provocatively coated ballad. It is something Debbie should not do at all.

Debbie Gibson - Anything Is Possible (1990)

|

Review by Alex Henderson @ allmusic.com
Debbie Gibson and Tiffany were often compared to one another in the late 1980s, and in 1990, there was even more reason to compare them when both singers tried to shed their teeny-bopper images and record more mature, less sugary albums. While Tiffany turned to new jack swing and urban contemporary with unconvincing and weak results on New Inside, Gibson had a bit more artistic success mining the dance-pop waters on Anything Is Possible -- but only a bit. Though some of the material is fairly decent (including "Another Brick Fall" and the Madonna-ish "It Must've Been My Boy"), most of it is pedestrian, homogenized and quite forgettable. And as the thin-voiced Long Islander approached 20, the fact remained that she didn't have a great range by any means.

From Amazon.com
Initially lumped in with Westlife, Boyzone, etc., as just another fabricated pop boy group, Five were one of the few bands who actually did stand out from the crowd. Eschewing soppy love songs in favor of far more in-your-face rowdy pop, Five bounced onto the scene with attitude, slightly more streetwise styling than their contemporaries, and some truly great pop tunes. From the inspired sampling of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock & Roll" on "Everybody Get Up" to the sing-along-and-clap-your-hands party vibes of "Got the Feelin'," it's hard not to be seduced by Five's charm. Things do go a bit Backstreet Boys on weaker tracks like "Until the Time Is Through" and "Satisfied," but these are forgivable blips on an otherwise stellar trajectory. The opening line of "Slam Dunk (Da Funk)" says it all: Five have "the power to rock you." --Helen Marquis
