Katie Melua - Live At The O2 Arena (2009)

‘Live at the O2 Arena’ was recorded on 8th November 2008 during Katie Melua’s 'Pictures' world tour. In a live review of the concert The Times wrote “her voice was rarely short of astounding” and this live recording leaves the listener in no doubt as to what a unique and extraordinarily perfect voice Katie has.
Katie opened the concert, with just her electric guitar for accompaniment, singing ‘Piece By Piece’ - the title track of her second album - and ‘Lilac Wine’ before taking a seat at the grand piano to play the Georgian folk song ‘Yellow Leaves’ (or Qviteli Potlebi).

The concert was a celebration of the remarkable success that Katie has enjoyed since the release of ‘Call Off The Search’ in 2003. Joined by her 6 piece band Katie weaved her way through her three multi-platinum selling albums including her debut single ‘Closest Thing To Crazy’, the international hit single ‘Nine Million Bicycles’ and the more recent singles from her third album ‘Pictures’.
After a mesmerising cover of Janis Joplin’s ‘Kosmic Blues’ Katie closed the show as she began, unaccompanied, to sing the heartbreaking ‘I Cried For You’.

Rissi Palmer - Rissi Palmer (2007)

Although she isn't the product of American Idol or Nashville Star,Rissi Palmer has made her way through some of the talent shows that have taken an increased role in identifying young performers. She competed in Hal Jackson's Talented Teens (formerly known as the Miss Black America pageant) and made the finals on Star Search. It is not surprising, therefore, that as a singer she exhibits both the pipes and the somewhat artificial style of successful contestants.The songs on her self-titled debut album, three-quarters of which she had a hand in co-writing with Nashville pros, are the typical collection of romantic clichés that might have been expected. Her debut single, "Country Girl," which somehow took five people to write, attempts to be a crowd-pleasing anthem in the tradition of "Redneck Woman," but also to subtly address the issue that cuts both ways in her career, that she's an African-American from St.Louis trying to make it as a country singer in Nashville. The question of whether the novelty of that will help or hurt her is actually less pressing than whether she will develop from a good singer with a repertoire of second-hand vocal effects and second-rate songs into a sufficiently distinctive artist to matter. Rissi Palmer gets her over the first hump, which is establishing credibility. As the judges on those contests could tell, the sheer vocal talent is there. The debut album does no more than confirm that; now the real work begins.

Yulia - Montage (2006)

Montage. Yulia's second album Montage is an appropriate description of this diverse fourteen track album. She opens with the lush "We're All Alone." Her lilting, rich tones in conjunction with the lovely orchestral accompaniment highlights the special draw of this musical artist. She exhibits a compassionate quality in her vocals. "No One Like You," reminiscent of Sarah Brightman's version, has a majestic air to it, with Yulia's gorgeous, soaring vocals. There is a gentleness to her singing, but then again, she can belt out her tunes with the best of them. Pop tune "Maybe" showcases her more contemporary side.

"You Are Here" opens with a soothing piano intro, and Yulia takes over with her luxuriant voice. The end result is a song filled with passion and power driven vocals. She continues with this passionate ardor in "Everything You Touched." Yulia whisks the listener away to Spain with the famed aria "Habanera" from Bizet's opera Carmen. Her exquisite operatic version is filled with fiery abandon. Another classic,, "Che Faro," is beautifully orchestrated and sung with perfection by Yulia. She sings with striking authority and warmth throughout this melodic piece. She continues in the same vein with "To Ni Veter."

Her versatility is evident as she lures the listener in "With You I'm Born Again." Through her gentleness of tone and lush passages, she engages the passionate side of emotion. This passion continues with another classic, "Pavane," by Faure. She follows this song with the wonderful James Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better." She sings the Marvin Hamlisch tune with sultry seduction and abandon.

The classical french love song "Plaisir d'Amour" is beautifully sung by this divine chanteuse. Charlotte Church, sang this song with a very different flair from the splendid Yulia, whose tones have a depth and richness that only her stunning contralto voice can execute so well. In "The Actress" there are exciting and powerful vocal crescendos. She concludes this fantastic album with the Freddie Mercury cover "The Show Must Go On." She sings this famed song with an emotive and powerful tribute to the meaningful depth of Mercury's epitaph.

In addition to the CD, the special edition includes a stunning DVD of her Montage live showcase from April 2006. The DVD allows the viewer a wonderful opportunity to watch the amazing Yulia in action. She owns the stage and her performance is quite enrapturing. She possesses great showmanship and definitely puts on a great show.

Montage is a complex and enlightening mosaic of songs that showcase Yulia's amazing talent. She shows great versatility in her style and does not fail to please. She can be likened to Sarah Brightman in her operatic and contempory stylings, but Yulia stands out with her incredible rich, contralto vocals as well as her fervent and heartfelt approach to her music.

Yulia - Into The West (2004)

(22 October 2008) Russian-born New Zealand classical crossover singer Yulia released her second album in 2006 entitled Montage (Sony BMG Music Entertainment (New Zealand) 200482876823752, 2006). Her debut album released in 2004 is called Into The West (Columbia (New Zealand) 5187582000, 2004 ). This gifted twenty-two year old has a lovely contralto voice that has wonderful maturity and dulcit tones. She has only learned the English language in 2002 so there is a distinct Russian accent in the delivery of her lyrics although unobtrusive. Yulia sings fluently in six languages; English, Russian, French, Italian, Spanish and Maori. Sadly both of Yulia's albums were deleted by Sony BMG New Zealand, however, the artist's management is seeking to reissue them as soon as a deal with their former label can be established.

Born in Volgograd, Russia in 1986, Yulia moved to New Zealand in 2002 and quickly adapted to life in her new country. She graduated from high school and immediately signed a recording deal with Sony Music New Zealand. Gray Bartlett, co-director and owner of the Auckland-based promotion company Pacific Entertainment Limited, signed her to a six year worldwide sole agency deal but was ended early by Yulia and she was managed temporarily by Michael Glading, the previous head of Sony NZ. In 2007 Yulia met Glyn MacLean, 17 years her senior, director and owner of Oikos Music Group and signed to a management and music publishing deal. In February 2008, Yulia married Glyn. She was the lead singer in a pop duo, the MacLeaNZ, with her husband.

Into The West. Her first album, Into The West, was released in 2004 to much acclaim. She was awarded New Zealand’s "Best Female Vocalist" at the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards (Pop, Folk, Classical). Montage displays her wonderful versatility in the various music genres. She easily flows from classical to pop to folk music without a hitch. Yulia is currently writing songs for her third album and an inspirational book. She aims to follow up on the commercial success of her first two albums with the release of her third album and her first book for either Christmas 2008 or Mothers Day 2009.

Into The West is a stunning debut album which combines her favorite genres of pop, classical and folk music. The opening track "Into the West" features Yulia's gorgeous, soaring vocals that elate the senses. She has a soulful depth to her music that is spectacular. A standout track is the delightly "Scarborough Fair" which brings to mind a sense of the renaissance era. She exudes clarity of sound in this inspiring track. "Angel," a cover from Sarah McLachlan, is performed simply and beautifully, putting Yulia's own touch on this lovely song. "The Prayer" opens with wonderful orchestration and segues into the tender and striking operatic aria that she performs so stunningly.

"L'Hymne A L'Amour" is a lovely track that could be part of a Broadway production. She flip-flops back and forth between languages with wonderful ease. She follows up with a traditional New Zealand lamentation in the Maori language called "Hoki Hoki Tonu Mai." She sings this powerful tune with grace and dignity in describing the lament of young Maori women whose husbands and lovers were lost in battle during World War I.

Yulia can be likened to Hayley Westenra especially in "Softly Whispering I Love You." These two young singers have a wonderful grace and exquisite tone which must be a special import from New Zealand these days. Yulia has a more pop sound in "I Go To Sleep" and the musical accompaniment appeals in a whimsical way. The famed Jacques Brel tune, "If You Go Away," is performed with a breathy and whispered tenderness. There is an almost yearning to the beginning of this song, and then Yulia breaks out with gorgeous, simple vocals that are quite poignant.

Another lovely tune is "One Day I'll Fly Away." Yulia creates a dreamy atmosphere with her precise and delightful melody. The song ascends to the clouds and then to the heavens with her beautiful sound. Handel's more popularly known "Largo" is performed here as "Ombra Mai Fu." Her rendition of this famous aria is quite majestic and the tempo is more upbeat than Handel's original. She certainly does this song justice in her version.

Of course Yulia goes back to her roots with her native tongue in "Russia." Her rich contralto makes this track a highlight of the album. She sings with passion and conviction. Yulia follows this song with "Bailero" which Sarah Brightman has performed on Eden and Classics. Yulia puts her own spin on this traditional piece from the Songs of the Auvergne. She sings with beautiful simplicity. She closes out this marvelous CD with the traditional Russian song "Otchi Tchornia (Black Eyes)" that Liberace was well known for performing. The lyrics mean "Eyes of ecstacy, Always haunting me, Always taunting me, With your mystery, Tell me tenderly, You belong to me, For eternity, Dark eyes, talk to me." One certainly gets the impression of haunting and taunting in this final track, and Yulia executes this song with great aplomb. The music enraptures the listener into imagining they are on the banks of the Volga being serenaded by their Russian comrades.

Yulia does not fail to please with Into The West. Hints of Hayley Westenra and Sarah Brightman come into play, but Yulia has a terrific contralto voice that is exquisite. In 2005, Yulia was awarded "Best Female Vocalist" and "Highest Selling Album of the Year" for Into The West in New Zealand. Those accolades are well deserved.

Christopher Cross' debut was a huge hit and widely acclaimed, at least among industry professionals (critics didn't give it a second listen), leading to multi-platinum success and Grammys. In retrospect, it might seem like the kind of success that's disproportional to the record itself, especially to hipper-than-thou younger generations, but in truth, Christopher Cross was a hell of a record -- it just was a hell of a soft rock record, something that doesn't carry a lot of weight among most audiences. That doesn't erase Cross' considerable gifts as a craftsman. Yes, he does favor sentimentality and can be very sweet on the ballads, but his melodicism is rich and construction tight, so there's a sturdy foundation for the classy professional gloss provided by his studio pros and friends, including indelible backing vocals by Michael McDonald. And while the hits like the dreamy "Sailing" and the surging "Ride Like the Wind" deserved all the attention, they're hardly the only highlights here -- to borrow a sports metaphor, this has a deep bench, and there's not a weak moment here. In fact, soft rock albums hardly ever came better than this, and it remains one of the best mainstream albums of its time.

Carly Simon's best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, "You're So Vain." That song set the album's saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography ("You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve") and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle. But Simon's honesty meant that her lyrical knife was double-edged; now that she felt she had found true love ("The Right Thing to Do," another Top Ten hit, was her celebration of her relationship with James Taylor), she was as willing to acknowledge her own mistakes and regrets as she was to point fingers. But it wasn't only Simon's forthrightness that made the album work; it was also Richard Perry's simple, elegant pop/rock production, which gave Simon's music a buoyancy it previously lacked. And Perry paid particular attention to Simon's vocals in a way that made her more engaging (or at least less grating) to listen to.

Beverley Craven - Loves Scenes (1993)

Beverley Craven has established herself as one the UK¡¦s most respected and gifted singer/songwriters.
Born in Sri Lanka in 1963, Craven and her family moved to Hertfordshire when she was two. Her formative years were spent learning classical piano and taking part in regular swimming competitions. Craven¡¦s taste in music developed slightly late and bought her first record, ¡¥Telephone Line¡¦ by ELO at the age of 15. As her tastes developed, she began listening to Elton John, Kate Bush and Stevie Wonder, writers who she believed ¡§made pop records that were very musical and very personal¡¨. After leaving school Beverley ventured to London where she began writing her own songs and recording demos.

Bobby Womack who heard the demos was so impressed that he offered to bring Beverley to the US and sign her to his own production company. She politely declined, but toured Europe as one of Bobby's backing vocalists.

Beverley continued to search for the right people to guide her career and handed out cassettes to anyone she met. One such tape fell into the hands of John Glover (Manager of Go West) and he decided that he should be the one to sign her for management a deal.

Beverley's self-titled debut album was released in July 1990. By the end of her first tour (famously sponsored by tampax), in February 1991, her album began to sell steadily and the single "Promise Me" reached number 3 in the U.K. singles chart on May 20th.

Her album reached the 1 million sales mark in January 1992 and turned double platinum in the UK. It reached Gold status in France and Ireland, and Silver in Holland. In February 1992, a heavily pregnant Beverley performed at the Brits Awards where she was nominated in three categories (Best British Newcomer, Best Female Artist, Best British Album) and winning the Newcomer award .

Her second album "Love Scenes", featuring the hit singles ¡§Love Scenes¡¨, ¡§Mollie¡¦s Song¡¨ and her take on the ABBA classic ¡§The Winner Takes It All¡¨ was released in 1993 and reached number 4 in the UK album charts. Craven undertook a tour of the UK taking such prestigious venues as Birmingham¡¦s Symphony Hall, Edinburgh¡¦s Usher Hall and London¡¦s Royal Albert Hall.

Following such rapid success, Beverley decided to step back from the hectic pace of her career and spend time with her young family.

After a lengthy break, she returned with her third album "Mixed Emotions" in 1999. The album was well received by fans and critics alike and Beverley embarked on a lengthy UK tour. Following this, Beverley once again decided to take time out from her career and despite a greatest hits package released in 2004 and a series of low key appearances, Craven has remained fairly quiet.

In the winter of 2007, Beverley Craven will release an autobiography which will focus on her life, career, music and battle with cancer. She hopes to have an accompanying CD with the book and will once again perform a series of much anticipated concerts throughout the year.

Beverley Craven - Beverley Craven (1990)

Beverley Craven's "Promise Me" was a hit throughout Europe in 1991, and remains an adult radio staple today. Bookended by a naggingly familiar rolling piano arpeggio, it's one of those songs with a melody so well-crafted and easy to memorize, you almost imagine you've heard it somewhere before. Like most of Craven's self-titled debut, "Promise Me" deals with love -- clearly her chief interest. She doesn't really explore the subject in depth, the way, say, Joni Mitchell might; her approach is more akin to that of a paperback romance novel, albeit a classy one. There's unrequited love ("I Listen to the Rain"), long-distance love ("Promise Me"), sisterly love ("Memories"), and love for pet dogs ("Joey"). This is all well and good, and Craven is certainly a fine and endearingly romantic composer, but what's missing is a bit of grit. The songs recall work by Karla Bonoff and Beth Nielsen Chapman, but while those two artists occasionally intersperse their lovelorn balladry with rock, country, or folk, Craven refuses to budge from one string-laden musical setting to another. "Two of a Kind" and "Woman to Woman" are uptempo cuts, but they adhere to the same formula as all the other songs, simply with a different time signature. It's a relief, then, that Craven's writing is so excellent, and her voice warm and unpretentious; otherwise she wouldn't be able to get away with such single-mindedness. (Charles Donovan)

Howard is undoubtedly one of the world's pre-eminent and versatile contemporary composers - from TV themes including Blackadder, Mr Bean and The Vicar of Dibley; through West End and Broadway musicals; a BAFTA award-winning TV documentary on the history and theory of music; and his prodigious writing of choral music including 2007's Eternal Light: A Requiem.

Enchanted Voices features 8 young sopranos sourced by Howard, who normally sing with choirs like The Sixteen and The Monteverdi, to capture an ethereal and angelic vocal set against an interweaving solo cello and occasional handbells. The album includes eight `Beatitudes', blessed chants from the Book of Matthew, for groups whose actions or burdens single them out for tribute from Christ. His arrangements of biblical prose include `Beati Pauperes (Blessed are the Poor)' and Beati Mundo Corde (Blessed are the Pure of Heart). There are also 4 new "Beatitudes" composed entirely by Howard, including `Pro curatis (For those that are cared for)' and `Pro Eis Sine Domo (For the stateless)', which sit alongside the original, flawless chants. In looking to fuse a modern approach to the style of ancient chants, it is undoubtedly this exploration that makes the collection such a unique and enchanting album.

This Japanese import collects 18 tracks from Sting's numerous film contributions, few of which ever achieved the popularity of his album cuts. It's an odd assortment that leaves out recent successes such as his Oscar-nominated work on Cold Mountain, and there's nothing here from 1982's excellent Brimstone & Treacle soundtrack, one of the artist's first forays into a solo career. My Funny Valentine: Sting at the Movies isn't dreadful, but it will probably appeal to die-hard fans only.

Charice, is a Filipina singer who rose to popularity through YouTube. Her videos have garnered more than 15 million hits. She has performed and gained standing ovations in South Korea,
United States of America, the United Kingdom, Italy, The Netherlands, and Canada.

In December 2007, Charice flew to the United States for the first time after having been personally invited by Ellen Degeneres to perform on her show. She sang Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You and her popular cover of And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.

In May 2008, Charice guested on The Oprah Winfrey Show in their World’s Smartest Kids episode. She sang Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing. In the same month, Charice was introduced to the international concert arena by David Foster in his tribute concert, David Foster and Friends, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. On September 13, 2008 she once again performed with
David Foster in the David Foster & Friends Charity Gala & Concert at Winspeare Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

On September 09, 2008, Charice once again guested on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the Dreams Come True episode. Oprah referred to her as The Most Talented Girl in the World. She sang Celine
Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, with David Foster on piano. Oprah went on to surprise her with an appearance by Celine Dion via satellite, inviting her to sing a special duet at the Madison Square Garden as part of her Taking Chances world tour.

On September 15 2008, Charice met with Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden in New York to perform a duet of Because You Loved Me. They dedicated the song to Charice’s mother. Her peformance with Celine got rave reviews in major newspapers namely The New York Post and The New York Times. The duet was eventually featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show on September 19,
2008.
