Wonder is the debut album from 19-year-old singer-songwriter Lisa Mitchell. Born in the UK she moved to Australia at an early age and eventually went on to take part in Australian Idol at the tender age of 16. She came 6th in the competition and after that decided to make it on her own and began crafting her album. Having written with the likes of Ed Harcourt and Crispin Hunt (Newton Faulkner) the album was recorded in late 2008, produced by Dann Hume and mixed by Jon Hume

Stephen Simmons - Girls (2009)

Stephen Simmons was raised in the small town of Woodbury, Tennessee. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father held a factory job. In his family, they were the first generation that didn’t work the farm. As a songwriter, Stephen’s vision has grown to entail more than just reflections of rural America. The songs on his new recording, Girls, deal with existential realities that are familiar to country and city dwellers alike: redemption, heartbreak, hangovers and the loneliness of the road. Like Stephen’s previous records, The Superstore, Last Call, Drink Ring Jesus, Something In Between, and The Blame’s On U.S. (which were compared to everyone from Johnny Cash to Ryan Adams), Girls combines virtuosic songcraft and musicianship with unparalleled artistic honesty.

Tommy Page - Madly In Love (1991)

Tommy's fifth studio album was basically a re-issue of the album that preceded it, "From The Heart", but with the addition of the two seasonal tracks, "You Make Christmas Feel Like Heaven" and "Christmas Without You". Of course, it would've been nice had he released a complete full-length holiday album like most artists do after reaching a certain point in their careers. Perhaps that's something he'll consider sometime in the future, but for now, the songs appearing at the beginning of 1991's "Madly In Love" will have to suffice:

Jordan Hill - Jordan Hill (1996)

It is probably inappropriate to label a singer as a cash in product. After all, a singer is an artist and not a laundry detergent commercial. The problem here is that the talented David Foster doesn't seem to know the difference and has taken the lovely Tennessean Jordan Hill as his "find." For all evident purposes, he has made her into a Mariah Carey cardboard cut out. Sure she seems sweet, sure she has voice and looks, too, but absolutely nothing here stands out as original or distinguishing, which is exactly what is demanded of a new artist who wants to make a career. There are some very listenable songs here with very nice production, Barry Gibb even lends his vocals to a remake of the Bee Gees' "Too Much Heaven." "Remember Me This Way" from the Casper soundtrack is pretty, but its best attribute was not due to itself but by playing at the emotional peak of that movie when Christina Ricci danced with the friendly ghost. It is hard to understand how the album goes wrong when the songs are decent, the production is decent, there is a duet with an All 4 One member, some R&B, some pop, some dance, and an attractive vocalist. The problem is that Jordan Hill deserves a "face" all her own, and not just a package to compete for radio.

Tommy Page - A Friend To Rely On (1992)

This rare album by Tommy Page was originally only released overseas in Asia, which is where the main focus of his music would be during the 90's and beyond. You will notice some big changes in his musical style from his past 80's albums--the biggest one being that he experiments with house music for the very first time. This probably isn't quite so surprising to some, since house music was a dominant force during that decade. And for pop artists who began in the 80's and continued into the 90's, it was a natural direction to take. This is a really fun pop album, and Tommy Page fans should be especially excited about the remixes of two songs from his debut album as well as his cover version of Nik Kershaw's 80's classic hit, "Wouldn't It Be Good":

Tommy Page - From The Heart (1991)

From the Heart has a promising opener called "Whenever You Close Your Eyes." It is a moving and inspiring ballad, written by Diane Warren and Michael Bolton, with chilling vocals by Tommy Page and powerful backup by Bolton. The rest of the album doesn't live up to that promise. For all of its old-fashioned nobility and soothing instrumentals, it is surprisingly lacking in personality. There is no mistaking that voice, but with so much filler, the occassional spark like "Can't Get You Outta My Mind" reminds us only of what the rest of From the Heart is lacking.

Utilizing New Kids on the Block for two tracks on this album doubtlessly helped catapult Tommy Page to short-lived American stardom, but he shows that he can hold his own on the remaining, memorable songs. Paintings in My Mind is a fresh, innocent album full of youthful longings, all painted in melodic pop style. The tunes penned with New Kids members, "I'll Be Your Everything" and "Turn On the Radio," are indeed good, but there are other treasures to be found. "You're the Best Thing," with its cheerful saxophone, and the title track's sweet simplicity allow Page's crisp, tender voice to gleam. Whether crooning about the picture on the wall of the girlfriend he's in danger of losing, calling the radio station for a dedication, or walking dreamily on a white sand beach, he reminds us of how vulnerable and pure the young heart can be. Often old-fashioned without sounding worn out, Paintings in My Mind is top fare for the teen pop crowd.

Tommy Page - Time (1994)

Tommy's seventh studio album is another rare find, and just like 1992's "A Friend To Rely On" and "1996's "Loving You", it too was also originally released solely for his fans overseas in Asia; the final track, in fact, is a personal message of appreciation to them. For some weird reason, the tenth track on this album, "Now That I Found You", has difficulty playing with the RealPlayer Media Player, but works just fine with the Windows Media Player. But despite this single glitch, 1994's "Time", with its combination of dance-pop, lush ballads, and a couple of house rhythms thrown into the mix, is another fine album by this versatile singer:

On Diva, Lennox infuses each song with tenderly perceptive lyrics, hypnotic rhythms, and irresistibly soulful wailings. Her arrangements are clean and simple, utilising bare instrumentation and sometimes-languid chord work. The singles "Walking on Broken Glass", "Little Bird", and "Why" became radio mainstays, while gems such as the Eastern-influenced dream ballad "Primitive", the hauntingly autobiographical pop-lament "Legend in My Living Room", and the cheerfully satirical "Keep Young and Beautiful" gave the album a plump maturity. --Sally Weinbach

VA - Sealed With a Kiss (1962-2006)

'Sealed with a Kiss' is the title of a song written by Peter Udell and Gary Geld. It was first recorded in 1960 by The Four Voices. While their version was released as a single, it failed to make a significant impact. In 1962, Brian Hyland, a frequent recorder of Udell's and Geld's material, released the song as a single. It became very popular, charting in the top ten of both the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. It recharted in the UK when rereleased in 1975.
The song became a hit again in 1968 when Gary Lewis and the Playboys released it as a single. This version also had a high placing on the Hot 100.
A third top forty Hot 100 version came in 1972, when Bobby Vinton released his version as a single. This version also placed high on Billboard's adult contemporary chart.
In 1989, Jason Donovan topped the UK Singles Chart for two weeks with his version. Donovan's version was a departure from the aforementioned three in that it featured elements of dance music

Cyndi Lauper - The Body Acoustic (2005)

Cyndi Lauper may have been mocked as a ditz when she emerged in 1983, but her songs have proven to be a lot more enduring than those by more critically respected artists of the 1980s. "Time After Time," for instance, has been covered by everybody from Miles Davis to Faith Hill to Uncle Kracker. That stylistic range can also be found on The Body Acoustic, on which Lauper--her voice now endearingly raspy--revisits her best-known songs with the help of an impressive gallery of guest stars. Sarah McLachlan comes in for "Time After Time," while the likes of Adam Lazzara (from emo band Taking Back Sunday), Shaggy, and Ani DiFranco also pay their respects. Okay, so we knew Lauper was a good songwriter, but what's been emerging lately is her talent as an interpreter. Here she does to her own material what she did to standards on 2003's At Last. Among the standouts are the stark "She Bop" and the catch-in-the-throat "True Colors" (both sans guests), and the superbly emotional "I'll Be Your River" (with Vivian Green). But lest you think Lauper had gone all serious on us, the album concludes with the bouncy "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"; Japanese duo Puffy Ami Yumi (a direct visual descendent of Lauper's early days) sings the chorus while Lauper herself lets loose on a new ska arrangement. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Review:
What comes to mind when thinking about music in Vienna? Well, Strauss' waltzes, and the Vienna Choir Boys, is probably what most people would think first. So, it's obvious to resort to this choir singing the texted versions of the waltzes, as a "souvenir" of Vienna...
It's hard to find any other recording where a boy choir shows as much wit, enjoyment, sheer pleasure, as here! On some of the polkas, that have comical texts appealing to children like few other lyrics do, the listener is tempted to fear that the singers will suddenly burst out in laughter!

Barcelona is a band from Seattle, Washington. The band's songs are harmonious and piano-based with elements of rock. Formed in 2005, the band cites U2, Coldplay, Copeland, Death Cab for Cutie and Lovedrug as its influences. Barcelona released a debut album, Absolutes, in September 2007, which was distributed through Curb Appeal Records. Originally working with A&R, the band decided to create its own label, NBD Music, in order to be able to focus on songwriting. Barcelona has also signed a co-publishing deal with Warner Chappell Publishing to aid in the album's distribution.

Barcelona is a band from Seattle, Washington. On December 18, 2008, the band announced that they had been signed to the major label Universal Records. On December 18, 2008 Universal Records announced that they had signed Barcelona to their label. The label plans for an April 2009 remastered release of Absolutes including additional tracks. Absolutes is being self produced by Barcelona and Brian Eichelberger. Michael H. Brauer, two-time Grammy winner for his work with Coldplay and John Mayer, will be mixing the album.

There are bound to be comparisons between this work and "Notre Dame de Paris"...another mass populist French musical. I won't make those comparisons here, other than to say that "Romeo And Juliette" is equally brilliant, and that if you love NDDP, you'll most likely also love this extremely beautiful work by Gérard Presgurvic.

This work begins with a moving narration by the composer/lyricist Presgurvic..then immediately seques into the driving rhythms of "Vérone". As the familiar story unfolds, Romeo and Juliette get a number of chances to sing several gorgeous duets...such as "Un Jour"...before the two lovers actually meet, "L'Amour Heureux"..the love at first sight duet, "Le Balcon"..the inevitable balcony scene, "Par Amour"..sung as Romeo And Juliette arrange their secret marriage with the Friar, and "Aimer" the first act closer performed as the two are wed. In the second act, the duo romantically offer "Le Chant De L'alouette," the wedding night song as Romeo awaits his exile.

The actors chosen to play the leads are indeed remarkable. Romeo is sincere and desperately in love, and his voice is very, very strong. The young actress who portrays Juliette matches his intensity in emotion, if not in vocal power, and in this piece she conveys the innocent, but spoiled Juliette to near perfection. She is nicely in tune, and I really looked forward to hearing her sing.

But the fine performers cast as Romeo (Damien Sargue) and Juliette (Cécilia Cara) are not the only talent in this powerful emotional show. Also outstanding are Romeo's lusty pals Phillipe d'Avilla as Mercutio, and Grégori Baquet as Benvolio. The balance of the cast are also wonderful in their respective roles, especially the actors portraying Juliette's father, her nurse, and the Prince of Verona. As for the music itself, it is absolutely CHILLING! And as good as the entire ensemble is, the real stars of this piece are the members of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bela Drahos, who give us some stunning, soaring string arrangements. The overall sound is rich and full, the voices crisp, the choir angelic. This is GREAT pop music.

The individual songs are memorable and addictive, just loaded with hooks...you just can't get them out of your mind. You'll probably be singing a few songs in French, even if you don't speak a word of it. Aside from those tunes previously mentioned, standouts are "Les Rois du Monde," "J'ai Peur," "On Dit Dans La Rue," "Mort de Mercutio," "Avoir Une Fille," "Pourquoi," "Sans Elle," and "Comment Lui Dire."

Some of the French is idiomatic, and therefore not all that easy to understand if you don't speak the language fluently. But because the story is so familiar, it's certainly easy enough to glean the central theme of each song. And, some of the French is basic and quite simple to understand. The many songs about the deaths of the various characters are heartbreaking. (I trust this statement doesn't ruin the story for anyone). But the most important aspect is, of course, the sheer musicality of this work. It's totally breathtaking; I haven't stopped listening to these fantastic CDs for about two months or more, and with each listen, I learn a few more French expressions. It's interesting to speculate if this musical will ever be translated into English for the London or Broadway stage in the tradition of "Les Miserables" and "Notre Dame de Paris." If someone takes on this monumental project, let's hope they keep the lyrical beauty intact. This is one phenomenal work of art to be treasured.

Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.

The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin

With this CD devoted solely to operatic arias--by none less than Giuseppe Verdi, the greatest Italian opera composer of all time--pop crossover phenomenon Andrea Bocelli throws his hat into the operatic ring with the big boys. The hat occasionally fits, and occasionally it doesn't. The beauty of the voice is undeniable, as is the relative ease in all registers. But, regardless of what the engineers do, it is clearly a small voice. For "Celeste Aïda"--Radames's great aria from Aïda--Bocelli opens with fine, as-big-as-possible exclamation and sounds confident; the long diminuendo on the aria's final high B-flat is stunning (whether or not the engineers were twiddling with the knobs, we'll never know). The tenor is more at home with Alfredo's Act Two music from La Traviata; he sings with grace and charm, ending the rarely performed cabaletta (a brief and showy piece that usually follows an aria) with one of the longest, most solid high Cs ever recorded. Elsewhere, there are mixed results: "Di' tu se fedele" from Un ballo in maschera is so free of feeling that it seems digitally produced. A big, unnecessary high D at the close of the Duke's cabaletta "Possente amor" from Rigoletto is screamed, and Bocelli sounds at times as if he's about to collapse from exhaustion during a heavy aria from Ernani. But "Ah si, ben mio" from Il Trovatore is beautiful, as is the Luisa Miller aria; Don Carlo also seems to fit Bocelli well. Needless to say, the singer's fans will certainly want to have this--and it might encourage them to try other recordings of music by Verdi. Newcomers and the curious will find plenty to admire, too. The sound itself remains alluring, and Bocelli has taken steps also towards improving his technique. In short, some nice surprises for the opera lover, and many for the Bocelli fan. --Robert Levine
